Confirmed - New Seattle TV Deal for this Huge Event!

It's a three-year deal, months in the making   Telecasting 4th fireworks, Torchlight Parade and Hydro races

Fox13 is, indeed, the brand new TV partner of SEAFAIR, the city's major, traditional and famous summer event.

It's been 'pirated' away from KIRO, which airs the annual Torchlight Parade.  Also, Fox 13 will televise the Lake Union fireworks on July 4, taking it from King.   And will do hydros as well.   Clean sweep.

Aggressive move!

  1. This is an aggressive move by Fox 13 and my first impression of this is that this is perhaps the most noticeable casualty yet for KIRO resulting from their overall cutbacks over the past few years. As to the hydros Wayne, KING has to my knowledge been working with a network over in Spokane, SWX, on that coverage. Fox 13 IMO I believe has the resources and manpower to produce a hydro broadcast themselves and perhaps bring back what KIRO had previously with all-day coverage of the races. So that will be something worth paying some attention to

  2. A bold move by Fox 13! This not only further solidifies their status as the top station for sports in town, but it also sets them on a path to becoming the top community events station in town.

  3. Hydro coverage with SWX (KHQ/KNDO/KNDU) has now parternered with FOX 13 on news coverage so they could then partner with them the coverage.

  4. Waaaay back in the 1960s-70s all three Seattle network stations covered the Seafair races live. What a circus! Three sets of cameras, anchor positions, mobile control rooms (KIRO’s was a huge white thing called Moby Bus) — and none paid for exclusive rights. Working the races and parade was grueling but fun and built a lot of in-house production skills and camaraderie.

  5. Good nostalgia there!!! Chaos!

  6. The timing is so odd, so last minute. Switching broadcast partners a week before the fireworks and five weeks before Torchlight isn't strategy—it's a last-minute scramble. By now, the Q3 revenue is largely spoken for. That's not smart business; it's a symptom of an organization that's lost its way.

    1. It is, but perhaps this new deal will help the Seafair organization stabalize and find a solid footing again in the long term.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

A Major change for Majors!

Tyrah Majors, KOMO morning traffic anchor and ARC Seattle co-host is entering the transfer portal, joining the KIRO morning news team on July 5 per her post on Instagram. Her last day at KOMO is June 26.   It's the first big anchor move by 7's new news boss.  Plus previously adding Nia Bliss (Wong-ex Fox 13) and Heather Bosch freelance (ex-Kiro radio).  Interesting to see exactly what her role there will be.  KIRO has a morning traffic anchor and an established news team in Dee Dee and Linzi plus Nick Allard on weather.    Waiting to hear more.    Majors also said she will continue teaching at Seattle U.     I have not been impressed by her work on ARC. Steve McCarron has carried her along. She's a strong brand builder, however.   You can search my previous posts about her on the site.   Could this also signal the end of ARC? I posted last week that a major move was going to happen in the market.  KING ...
