Tyrah Majors, brand builder, strong news anchor?

She has a Masters from USC, has taught at Seattle U, but seems lost on ARC Seattle, just a reader with no depth.   She couldn't offer a knowledgeable, tangible thought about the gun violence issue in Seattle the other morning.  I previously posted about it .  I expect much more journalistic and anchor skills.  I observe lots of bragging about accolades and glam pics on website. Build traffic reports into a transpo beat?

Offer some stories you broke, or any substantive coverage.  Where's the cred?

  1. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Sorry Tyrah but I can't see yours.

  2. Anchors being forced to give opinions on hot button issues that even the Mayor won’t speak to without a handler pulling her away is a big ask. Of course Tyrah isn’t going to stick her neck out on that. Nor should she.

  3. Tyrah is definitely a brand builder. She could emphasize her journalistic credentials more on her website, but I get the feeling that she is trying to give equal weight to all of her ventures and show that she can do a little of everything, from delivering television traffic reports to teaching at a University, without favoring one thing over the rest. In this day and age, having her hand in more than one line of work isn't a bad thing, and being on television is great for building her brand. ARC might not be the right format for her, though.

  4. Tyrah was the one who created the ARC Seattle show to begin with and it seems like a basement-level version of the Today show. I don't even get the premise of the show at all. Is it like is it supposed to be a simplified CliffNotes-type newscast to those of us who don't watch the full half-hour or hour of the regular newscasts? There is nothing on her site that says to me she has any journalistic credentials to speak of other than she has a Masters, teaches, has written a coffee table book, featured in a small-print magazine and happens to work in TV. That's a yawn. If I was an ND and saw her reel or any of her traffic reports recently, there anything at all "unique" that makes her stand out other than she inserts herself too much on stories her colleagues have done and nothing of substance.

    1. ARC was a SInclair mandated show in multiple markets, I believe. It is duopoly inventory placeholder. It has no premise, not living up to its initials, for that matter:
Authentic, Relevant, Community. Maybe a little of the latter. Her reel would not impress a News Director looking for a command type anchor, unless he or she wants to hire a model. NDs check web sites, you know. Doesn't help her. On the other hand she may make more as an influencer than a traffic reporter/host.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

A Farewell to this Fox 13 Seattle host

Carly Henderson - co-host of Studio 13: Live - was laid off in the recent KCPQ expansion which we broke.  She posts her goodbye on FB.  She never really clicked on the pay for play lifestyle mid-morning show.   It will be cut to a half hour for awhile and moved to 10 a.m, according to reports, before moving back to 11 on Aug. 4.  And I am told it will remain 30 minutes, not be re-expanded to an hour.   Thank goodness. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16HFRSYM8x
