Hey Fox 13, it's daytime...

Just happened to switch on Fox 13 at 421 Weds afternoon to see anchor David Rose and Hana Kim in front of a night scene of Seattle with the Space Needle all lit up against a dark sky and lights on in a large building downtown.   What, you don't have a daytime shot???  It's not November!!!   What's the deal?  Oh it must be the replays! Or is it because they call the show Seattle News TONIGHT?   It's not tonight at 421, folks.  I'll hang up and listen.

  1. The nighttime backdrop does look out of place in the 4pm and 5pm hours at this time of year. It'll look more appropriate in November.

If only they could do a second live hour each evening, say around 8pm, so that viewers watching later in the evening can have more up-to-date news, and the 4pm live hour and the 5pm replay can have a daytime backdrop.

  2. Use a keywall with graphics and change the backdrop virtually to match dayparts

  3. Gotta record it now so you can play it back numerous times later.

    1. I don't think you like me....but I can handle it.

    2. Oh I like ya. I’m just saying, that’s their approach: record to save a buck and punish the viewers who keep coming back.

  4. Pretty Bush League! Isn't anyone watching at headquarters?

    1. I don't know this for a fact, but I would have to think that someone at Fox's corporate headquarters would make a point of regularly watching newscasts from their stations to make sure that they are being professional, or at leaat doing what Fox corporate wants them to do.

  5. This topic is important, WHY?

  6. Important is not the issue. It's a media blog making observations about TV news.

  7. It’s a basic that any competent news production crew would handle easily. Not “important” per se, but very telling about the Q being hollowed out for cost savings.

    1. Its sad to see any local TV station undergo budget reductions, and Fox 13 is no exception. Tribune built up a nice alternative to the big 3 stations in town when it came to local news that managed to be informative and, particularly on the morning show, fun, mostly without being too serious or too unprofessional. When Fox Corporate took over, the fun started slipping away, but the station remained informative. Now, the fun is mostly gone, and the station isn't as informative as it once was with the evening newscasts often covering fewer stories than they used to. That being said, the stories they do cover are being given more time to breathe, so there is still good information to be learned by watching Fox 13.

  8. It's hard to watch. Can't tell if David Rose is taking one for the home team or likes the new format. Hate the easy chairs.

    1. I can't speak for Rose. But I do get the impression that he may at least be enjoying some of the banter that now takes place between stories with Kim.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
