The Jamie Tompkins Plot Thickens

This former Fox 13 Seattle main anchor has filed a $3M suit against the city over the alleged saga about her and the police chief.   This will get ugly and the Mayor's name is out there, too. More from Fox 13 Seattle: https://www.fox13seattle.com/news/jamie-tompkins-demands-3m-sexual-rumor

Preston back in action

Saw Preston Phillips on KOMO 6 pm Wednesday. Just FYI.  Sill there for now.

Kraken Hockey analyst welcomes new team

Alison Lukan steps from the TV announce booth to the press conference podium for the new Seattle PWHL franchise announcement today.  As posted here previously, we wonder who will get the media rights?  Team has no official name/mascot yet and will play in the 25-26 season season for approx 30 games. https://x.com/AlisonL/status/1917659012595867779?t=rgxoTmvckb74XXS--H3VGg&s=19

Seattle TV sports show migrates

Fox 13's Alyssa Charlston says the station's weekday evening sports show is going places. https://x.com/Alyssacharlston/status/1916898171583926421?t=pcBQ7G6BlFO3rMMOtiBs5w&s=19

Cougs get home cooking on the CW

Stepping just slightly into sports here as the CW in WA will be home to many WSU home games next season, well, except for the Apple Cup to the CBS SportsNet. Nice news though for ARC Seattle KUNS viewers!!  And KSKN in Spokane! Aug. 30 vs. Idaho, 7 p.m. on The CW. Sept. 6 vs. San Diego State, 7:15 p.m. on The CW. Sept. 20 vs. Washington, 4:30 p.m. or 5 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. Oct. 25 vs. Toledo, 12:30 p.m. on The CW. Nov. 15 vs. Louisiana Tech, 7 p.m. on The CW. Nov. 29 vs. Oregon State, 3:30 pm CW

Frankie Flees KIRO7

UPDATE:  Frankie got married!!! Acting on tips from two of my loyal readers, I see that Weekend Weather Wizard Frankie Katafias is indeed missing from the KIRO 7 website.  Freelancer Scott Haveson filled in this past Sunday and we know that reporter Brandon Thompson has hit the weather wall in the past as a fill-in.   No word on if Frankie fled on her own or was told to.   She came to Seattle in 2022, so maybe it was a three-year deal that ended?

Soliz and Shen together, but there's 'Something About Mary.'

Good to see a 5 pm show on KOMO with ex-KING's Steve Soliz teaming with Molly Shen.   Very strong vs KING's Joyce Taylor whose name is uniquely on the 5pm show there.  On the other hand, why is Mary Nam doing a sub-anchor piece at the big wall about a major power outage in Europe???   Not enough local news?  Who does that affect locally?  It's a 30 second story.  New News Boss wants more anchor power on the program?    Mary Nam now co-anchoring the 6 pm with Molly - NO Preston Phillips.  Maybe he is off, or they wanted him to disappear a bit while adjustments are made.  You never know.    Musical chairs. And Steve Soliz says he will be anchoring the 10 pm on ARC Seattle per his opening intro.     Surprised to see Molly soloing the 11.  No sign of Preston.

Kudos to two Seattle TVs

In Seattle both KING and KOMO led their evening newscasts Sunday with reports on the final important state legislative decisions in Olympia.  Excellent.   Actually covering important news.    KIRO, not even close.  They have NO reporter at the Capitol.

Was this a 'Could it happen here?' story or just a weak tie-in??

The awful incident in Vancouver BC that killed 11 when a driver slammed into a Filipino festival crowd prompted KIRO to send reporter Deborah Horne out Sunday to file a 5pm story on whether or not Pike Place folks are worried despite new restrictions on vehicle traffic there or just concerned about the rules.  Ok but it's a stretch IMHO. Plus in a rating period we get real estate man Scott Haveson putting his decades-old weather hat on with no Frankie Katafias today. And of course no weekend morning news as usual.  Plus Steals and Deals paid segment.   Yikes. Send Horne to BC .. that's a story when there might be real Seattle ties.

CBS golf gets KIRO Sunday into a Bogey

Looks like a CBS power outage at the Zurich golf site in New Orleans shut down the live feed, so the network replaced it with the 2024 tournament replay.  KIRO 7 forced to run a locally inserted lower third crawl advising viewers they are watching last year's play instead of today's 2025 final round due to 'technical difficulties.'   The crawl looks station-originated and is on a loop.    Now, CBS is calling the whole thing a 'weather delay' with its own upper left bug.   Update, play is suspended at 12:42 PT/2:42 CT and the network is doing leaderboard update, not from the site, but from NYC studio, which is apparently related to earlier info about tech problems.    Play resumed with the live telecast at 2:15/5:15. We will need an adult beverage at the 19th hole to sort out the mixed messages.

May ratings sweeps underway in Seattle TV

The 'book' started Thursday, the 24th and goes thru the 21st of May.   Will be interesting to see if KING goes to solo anchors on the evening newscasts and with the departure of  #2 male Steve Soliz.   Can confirm the 6:30 and 7 will be co-anchored.   But it seems that Jessica Jenner Castro and Greg Copeland will have more solo air time with Copeland working alone at 10 & 11.  Castro probably solo 4 and 9 and co-anchor 630 with Greg.   Also want to see how Soliz and Preston Phillips split shows on KOMO.  Personally, I think Molly Shen and Soliz together would be refreshing for KOMO.  P.S. Will give EVENING a look as well as this is the first book without Jim Dever.   Saint Bryan seems still solid as host. This sweeps is a key sales barometer for TV's all the way into late Fall, even though overnights come in daily.   TV sales are based both on traditional linear viewership and IMPRESSIONS of the product ...

Don't shoot a TV interview like this.

This from Fox 13 Seattle.   The goal is to get at least a 3/4 shot of the interviewee's face, NOT her hair.  The shot has to be choreographed between the reporter and photog, so that as the interview begins,  the reporter takes a good step or so to the right so that the subject can turn toward her and we can see who's talking.    I know this is not news, but I put my live shot tips hat on today.

UPDATE: Have finally adjusted my site to get followers as well as comments, FYI

Thanks for all the kind words everyone.   I am staying the course and have learned how to get followers, too.   Still learning the ropes, I guess/  I appreciate a reader who brought the problem to my attention.

March PPM Ratings for Seattle Radio

KUOW continues on top for third straight win with KZOK on its trail. KISW popped, KING dropped.  KIRO-FM lowest number this year but still in top 10.    Conservative KTTH may be riding the Trump coat tails some.    https://ratings.radio-online.com/content/arb039

Seattle TV Sports Guy Slashes the Kraken

Sticks up to FOX 13 Seattle Sports Director Aaron Levine who sent the Seattle Kraken to the penalty box for promoting GM Ron Francis up in its corporate food chain, even though his leadership has led to the firing of two coaches in four years and only one playoff appearance.  During the opening of the Washington Sports Wrap Show Wednesday, Levine said: "To me, there is something wrong about being moved up!  The team has clearly underperformed for two straight years." Good for Aaron.  He has taken on the Mariners GM and its team mediocrity as well.    Seattle is a soft TV market in general when it comes to criticizing its sports teams.   Nice to see some one speak out instead of cheerleading.

Not a good time for Seattle Hockey

A franchise going backward even in expansion mode.  Coach fired after one year, old boss fails up, team lowers some ticket prices, KHN nothing more than so-so TV pre game and would love to see game ratings.

New Portland TV Anchor/Reporter

Lia Kamana~ joins KPTV in Portland as the new noon anchor and morning reporter.  She comes from KITV in Honolulu. https://x.com/LiaKamanaTV/status/1887675280665571561?t=-tsFASczz-wXZsJk8H1WLw&s=19 Meanwhile, anchor/reporter Mia Villanueva is leaving the station after a four-year run.  She has jumped across the street to KOIN.

Seattle radio station nominated for a Peabody

" Lost Patients” NPR’s  Lost Patients  reframes the conversation around mental illness in the United States by centering the voices of those experiencing psychosis and exposing systemic failures in mental health care. KUOW Public Radio, The Seattle Times, NPR

Which station would televise women's hockey?

Well, Seattle doesn't have a PWHL franchise yet, but apparently it's under consideration. Made me wonder, with the emphasis on televising live sports, who would want the TV rights if it happened?  Root Sports certainly could use something new and KCPQ Fox 13+ already airs some Seattle T-Birds games and the Rugby Seattle Wolves.   Maybe we will see. In retirement, this popular Seattle TV anchor has a big announcement

1q,9 Former main KOMO anchor Eric Johnson returned to the news set Friday, opposite his old partner Molly Shen, to share an announcement partnering with his alma mater at Washington State University.  It's a new "Eric Johnson Creative Storytelling Scholarship."  Johnson has held news storytelling workshops for students year after year at the Murrow Symposiums there.    Johnson retired last June.  Nice work here to help young aspiring broadcasters.  Like the white hair, too! https://www.facebook.com/EricJohnsonHeroes/

Typical hyped teases at this Seattle TV

Typical Sinclair. A tease with specific details about a serial car thief arrest at SeaTac. Great, but how about a tease telling your viewers it might be safer to park there from now on?   Nah. Hype not help.

Incestuous TV news at its best

David Muir, ABC's main news anchor, named to Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential of 2025 (along with such luminaries as Snoop Dogg).   Just so happens ABC is airing the entire special on the list next week and Diane Sawyer wrote a tribute to him which aired on the evening news Friday with the announcement.     Awful.  Gag me.   Sheesh....Don't showcase more important people...

Ousted Seattle TV anchor slides across the street

Steve Soliz, who left KING 5 Seattle just a few weeks ago, is joining KOMO.  Fast landing.  KOMO just posted for a main anchor, so here he is, per linkedin.com.   Nice move.   He's solid, for sure. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/steve-soliz-936818b_breaking-news-im-excited-to-share-that-activity-7318305942750535681-gQjx?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAAFWTKaUBTwc4NGLVz4TARZHYT8qQaNhaM2E

Root Sports Mariners app in foul territory for $19.99?

Haven't heard a lot of praise so far for the new Root Sports app for watching the Mariners.   Here's a comment from a Seattle sports talk radio host. https://x.com/IandFurness/status/1912296430091530637

Dumped Seattle anchor goes Schmaltzy

K5 former anchor Steve Soliz with a heartfelt goodbye to bosses, et al.  It's a little much.  They are saving money, Steve. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/steve-soliz-936818b_as-i-reflect-on-the-first-20-years-of-my-activity-7317928443835260929-K3EP?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_android&rcm=ACoAAFWTKaUBTwc4NGLVz4TARZHYT8qQaNhaM2E

Another landmark moment for KOMO news

I can't see the story video on KOMO because you are blocking the screen!!!!       It's distracting and anchor on-cam overkill.    Adding a full screen to the mix is foolish. Does it grow viewers or engagement? No.

PNW TV anchor hits the exit ramp

Former Seattle TV news boss has a big controversy to handle

Erica Hill-Rodriguez is the news boss at KTLA in Los Angeles, a Nexstar station.  The N-word turned  up on the station's social media account and now the National Association of Black Journalists is demanding a meeting and answers.  Very tough to manage when this happens on your watch.   Erica has been at KTLA for just under two years.  She led KCPQ in Seattle for six years. The station says it was accidental while it was adjust language filters.   If you want to see more, I refer you to  https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2025/4/12/nexstar-station-posts-the-n-word-on-social-media

Big DAD Decision for this Seattle & National sports media man

Fox college football analyst and Puyallup native Brock Huard is saying bye-bye to broadcasting, announcing a priority decision to coach his son.  He adds that with all the changes in college football, it is good time to move on from the booth and travel.   Brock starred as QB at UW and later joined the Seahawks.  He will continue at KIRO radio.    More on this Mike Vorel scoop at the Seattle Times. https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/uw-husky-football/brock-huard-is-stepping-back-from-broadcasting-to-share-a-sideline-with-his-son

HUGE news: Three Seattle former and current TVers join KNWN Radio

Former KIRO main anchor Aaron Wright, former KOMO anchor Chris Nguyen and current KOMO reporter Denise Whitaker are heading to 97.7.    Wright and Nguyen have landed on their feet after being recently cut by their stations and Whitaker, a longtime fixture at 4, is coming in June.    Here's the press release: https://www.nwnewsradio.com/2025/04/09/trio-of-tv-news-hosts-make-a-move-to-seattle-newsradio/?fbclid=IwY2xjawJjbutleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHuY_hJneoWaEndxFXrRwH_p12bCrJf0w2PMO5FRF9o4kYCHOZshuW-Z0l-nj_aem_SEkttfMxDyRxf_YJ_D0V0A

The PNW Sinclair TV's wlll 'Drone' on even more

The FAA has granted evil empire Sinclair, which owns, KOMO, KATU and KIMA in the PNW permission to fly drones over people and moving vehicles without a waiver, the first company to get such federal approval.   So, as the old saying goes, "Keep Your Eyes on the Skies."   Details here: https://www.adweek.com/tvspy/faa-allows-sinclair-to-fly-drones-over-people-and-moving-vehicles-without-a-waiver/

Not a good look for this Seattle TV crew

Reposting this courtesy of my friends at ftvlive.com.  A KIRO 7 crew covering the aftermath of a stabbing in Marysville, WA, was far too aggressive for this woman as they pressed her for an interview.  Looks like the reporter standing next to the action is Jason Sloss. https://www.patreon.com/posts/should-he-be-125692186/instant-access?token=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJyZWRpc19rZXkiOiJpYTI6MWExZjc5YzUtMGNlZS00NjQxLTk0NTUtMGM0NjE4NTc5NzAzIiwicG9zdF9pZCI6MTI1NjkyMTg2LCJwYXRyb25faWQiOjExNjczNDYyfQ.sqXJQo8ybFR3R95ma41p0vGEE9RP55QiRZxzjsr-k0Y&utm_source=post_link&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=patron_engagement&utm_id=d6ce6d80-2bba-481f-945d-caafb75b05d6
