I thought KOMO morning anchors badly needed their height better equalized on camera. But Fox 13's team of David Rose and Hana Kim is even worse with another poorly composed two-shot. Is anybody in the control room? Guess not. Hana made to look small and subordinate. It's called "Go tighter. Get the irrelevant wings out."

Our local TV stations clearly seem to need some advice on how to stage their shots to avoid impressions that their talent looks small and subordinate. We are a top 20 market. We can, and should, do better.
ReplyDeleteBack when stations had floor directors this never happened. Now, there’s nobody around to scoot a box around give someone a boost! But private equity and mergers don’t care.
ReplyDeleteBoxes are unsightly and wouldn’t work with today’s full body camera shots. Maybe if the smaller person was in position a foot closer to the camera it would help balance the height difference.
ReplyDeleteShould the number of full body camera shots that are done today be reduced? Should anchors return to the days where they always sat behind the anchor desk and didn't move around the studio during the newscast?
DeleteShots should always be rehearsed and framed properly and put in the cameras memory. It punches up perfectly. There are no camera operators on the studio floor. All moves done from the control room.
DeleteYou don't see the boxes. It's stage business. Doesn't have to be large. Just enough for better talent balance.
