I decided to peek in at the 5pm newscasts after the Seahawks sale was announced Saturday around 4.
KING was tops with Paul Silvi joining virtually from his home and discussing his belief about the ownership group leaving the team alone to defend their title and primarily working on the improvement of Lumen Field in hopes of a Super Bowl someday. Good authoritative insights from the best vet in town, responding as the station should, getting the Sports Director immediately involved.
On the other hand, there was no sports anchor for the entire show, with news anchor Madeline Carter doing all the stories. That's with four people on the staff!! Dusty Baker, Maddie's significant other, still MIA on air. Oh well, it's summer.
Maenwhile, Niko Tamurian was apparently off today at KOMO. Michelle Esteban had to cover. Niko was not on set at all and his sports segment was clearly pre-taped with no mention of the sale. What surprised me is that KOMO did not at least have Chris Daniels on the phone to flesh out the story with his contacts. Or at least get Niko on the phone to weigh in. Disappointed. Bad timing on breaking news. Real breaking news.
Poor KIRO, with no sports department, a brand new freelancer had to stand in front of Lumen and vamp the story in a rush, followed by Eric Thomas and color bars going nowhere and then trying to intro a freelance weather wizard from bygone days. His face tells it all. Yikes.
Fox was in World Cup, so no comparison I can make there. Did not even see a lower third crawl at least. Nobody home? And, no, I did not waste my time going to KJZO. If I missed something, sorry.

I'm hoping the transition will be just as inconsequential, as the local TV station's coverage. Hoping that the only difference will be the signature on the paycheck.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed. The franchise isn't broken. So it doesn't need fixing.
DeleteKING and Q13 posted their clips on YouTube. KING: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XKb7dINb1A&list=PLi8V8UemxeG5dzVnu83d6gq1Cw1ACqefw&index=19 KCPQ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjVjuqavGwA. Q13's clip features Lauren Helmbrecht so they had something during their news on Saturday. But in watching KING's clip, I would strongly agree with you KING won this one. Maddie Carter I thought did a fantastic job guiding that live segment w/Silvi and allowing him to explain his views on this very well to the viewers. If her performance there is any guide, Carter's going to be a good one for a long time on the desk at KING.
ReplyDeleteI truly was surprised that Daniels wasn't involved on this one from the jump. Maybe he worked the late news. Didn't watch.
ReplyDeleteTBH Wayne I almost wonder if the news deliberately dropped when it did to prevent there being more media coverage of it? I honestly would agree about Daniels on this too but the release from Allen came down 15 minutes before KOMO's 4:00 news came on so they had no lead time to do anything about it
DeleteThat's why I waited till 5 to watch the stations after having a shot at getting a reaction. More fair appraisal. Niko being off on a Saturday hurt KOMO. He could have been on set just to report the reports!!
ReplyDeleteThis just adds another reason to the list of many why Niko, as great as he is, needs help in the KOMO sports department. He shouldn't have to shoulder the burden on his own. Even he needs a day off every now and then!
DeleteExactly IDC but Sinclair I feel made this bed when they cut Femi Abefefe a few years back, a move which I strongly feel led to Mike Ferreri's eventual exit himself and Niko replacing him. That all said, if you are them or even KIRO for that matter, it occurs to me they could perhaps have a cheap freelance option available to both of them locally if they do want to shore up their sports coverage - Steve Bunin. Bunin prior to his stint at KING worked at ESPN
DeleteGiven the explosion of sports here KOMO looks like it's hobbling along, despite Niko's one man army. The Bunin idea is a great one.
DeleteI also like the Bunin idea. He would bring serious credibility and a wealth of knowledge to the table
DeleteI wonder if he applied after leaving KING. Hev set up his own consulting biz shortly after departing. Maybe KOMO wasn't interested then or now. Who knows?
