Seattle TV has a new news boss

Jennifer Dahl gets the nod after some years as an agent and consultant.  Good luck.    This from rickgevers.com.

JENNIFER DAHL will start June 15th as the next ND for Cox Media's KIRO-TV (CBS) in Seattle. GM PAT NEVIN sent this note to the staff. Jen is a former ND in Phoenix (KTVK-TV) and Salt Lake City (KSL-TV), and held corporate jobs with Tribune, Local TV, and Sinclair. For the last few years, she's been working as an agent and consultant. Her Linkedin page has more. Jen replaces LAURA EVANS who left in April after almost three years as ND.

Late Breaking: Scott Pelley of 60 Minutes fired for cause.

  1. Welcome to Seattle, Jennifer! I hope her arrival will usher in a new era of success for KIRO!

  2. I'm sorry to hear of Pelley's firing from 60 Minutes. CBS has done great damage to such an esteemed news program. It will never be the same.

  3. Fascinating hire. Was KIRO deliberately looking for someone with a track record and business experience outside of local news management -- or is the traditional producer to exec producer to ND pipeline drying up?

    1. Sounds like she just wanted to get back inside a newsroom again. Maybe she has a Cox connection in one of their other markets or with the GM.

  4. There were some stations back then in the 1960s and 1970s who made unconventional hires bringing in so-called "news consultants" to become news directors or even washed-up movie actors looking for a second break. I don't know any station here in Seattle can size up the audacity in their next producer hire and say he/she/they have "news director" potential. Even the term "news director" these days seems to be fizzling in favor of "content manager".

    1. Cox had long been a company wedded to research, so the fact that Dahl has been a consultant who understands news research could have been a big factor in her being hired. Same just happened to a former KING who left a big consulting job to return to a newsroom in a small market to boot.

    2. And yes, Content Manager is the multi-platform, modern title for ND.

UPDATED: Seattle TV Weather Wizard's Finale

Her goodbye post below! After an almost five-year stint, FOX 13 meteorologist and part-time news anchor Abby Acone ends her run there with a final show on this Sunday morning.  Married earlier this month, she left no word on what's next.  Not sure if it is fully her decision, but I'm told she had 'favored nation' status with news management.  Before joining 13 in December of 2021, she worked three years at KOMO and also did a stint in Tri-Cities. Fittingly, this last shot on IG is studio appropriate.    I've been frequently critical of her on this site for using the station's studio to post questionable videos (IMO), but for now, good luck.   Here's Abby's goodbye post: My heart is so full as I reflect on my final week at FOX 13 ❤️ 🥹 I’m incredibly grateful for my time here and for the remarkable people who made this place feel like home. I’ve had the joy of working alongside some of the most talented, hardworking, and genuinely wonderful people in th...

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.
