UPDATED - Streaming sports competition at 630 pm in Seattle?

Noticed a social media post Monday that said KING's The Ultimate Sports Show will specifically stream on KING5+ at 630, the same time as Fox 13's Washington Sports Wrap.  Stoking some competition?   The KING show airs on KONG at 10 am and streams on KING5+, but this is a counter move pushing a specific evening time slot to attract streamers.   It might have been happening since the April debut, but my first time noticing any pre-emptive strike.

UPDATE  this move was because KING had an NBA on NBC game and no early news Monday.  So, likely  sampling opportunity but a smart idea to push it against Fox13's show for sports streamers.

  1. So the show has its first airing on KING5+ at 10am, and then reairs at 6:30pm? It runs the risk of being out of date by the time 6:30pm comes around, especially on a big sports news day.

Also, re-airing this show at 6:30pm puts it right up against KING's long running 6:30pm newscast. Is this a sign that KING is looking to make a change at 6:30 sometime in the near future?

    1. Upon further review, KING carried an NBA game Monday night, thus there was no early news, so this may have just been an added sampling opportunity for streamers at 630 opposite the Fox13 show. Regularly scheduled news not threatened.

    2. That makes more sense. As much as I would like this new sports show to succeed, I would hate to see the 6:30pm newscast go away as a result of it.

  2. Would seem to think that is the case that KING is looking to compete with Fox 13. And this is what they should have done to begin with IMO. Also may be a sign the station realizes the time setup at 10am is stretching Silvi/Egan out too much, so perhaps they'll look to do the live show at 6:30 with restream/reair the next day at 10am?

    1. I now think this was just pushed at 630 because KING had an NBA game pre-emping news. In a sense it was a one off, but targeted against Fox13 to get sampling by sports streamers. I may have been initially projecting the motive, but is a smart play.

    2. Agree Wayne. And what's more, there's going to be another opportunity tonight for them to do exactly this again as NBC is carrying an NBA game. It's odd though, is KING streaming its news at 5 with these playoff preemptions?

    3. They do a 4pm local news followed by NBC Nightly, so not sure if they are streaming news at 5 once the game starts.I have not checked on that. Maybe they just keep the 4pm stream up during the game until 630, and then the sports show hits opposite 13.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

A Farewell to this Fox 13 Seattle host

Carly Henderson - co-host of Studio 13: Live - was laid off in the recent KCPQ expansion which we broke.  She posts her goodbye on FB.  She never really clicked on the pay for play lifestyle mid-morning show.   It will be cut to a half hour for awhile and moved to 10 a.m, according to reports, before moving back to 11 on Aug. 4.  And I am told it will remain 30 minutes, not be re-expanded to an hour.   Thank goodness. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16HFRSYM8x
