No local decision yet on replacing CBS radio

Despite the powerhouse station in Washington DC (WTOP) switching to ABC Radio News from the imminent CBS network closure, no decision yet that I have seen from 97.3 KIRO on hooking up with a new national/world news provider.  Management apparently still mulling options.

  1. I’m not surprised, seems the older I get the more out of touch that station seems to be . Does anyone think they are on the cutting edge ?

    1. I wouldn't say that they are on the cutting edge by any stretch. But I wouldn't say that the station is completely out of touch either. Seattle's Morning News with Charlie Harger and Manda Factor co-hosting is actually pretty good.

  2. ABC would be the obvious choice, but KIRO FM's commercial news competitor, KNWN (1000 AM, 97.7 FM), already has it. That leaves a new startup with no reputation, or some crackpot networks. Perhaps they will just do their own newscasts. Consider KNKX and KUOW for radio news.

  3. I was thinking that AP has a service. But, if they do their own thing, it opens up inventory.

    1. It would cost KIRO Radio a fair amount of money and require additional staffing to do their own newscasts. However, their parent company, Bonneville International, does have two other news radio stations, KSL in Salt Lake City and KTAR in Phoenix. So if the three stations shared a national news operation, it wouldn't be as big of a burden.

  4. I agree with ICD 9. The morning new is excellent, Manda and Charlie are compelling as the the new generation replacing the unreplaceable Dave Ross

    1. Dave Ross is a tough act to follow, but Charlie and Manda are doing it as well as anyone.

  5. AP hasn't done radio newscasts or an audio clip service in years. They are rapidly shrinking like most news outlets.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

A Farewell to this Fox 13 Seattle host

Carly Henderson - co-host of Studio 13: Live - was laid off in the recent KCPQ expansion which we broke.  She posts her goodbye on FB.  She never really clicked on the pay for play lifestyle mid-morning show.   It will be cut to a half hour for awhile and moved to 10 a.m, according to reports, before moving back to 11 on Aug. 4.  And I am told it will remain 30 minutes, not be re-expanded to an hour.   Thank goodness. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16HFRSYM8x
