UPDATE: How's WSW looking with the a.m. competiton now? Alyssa: Here or gone?

I thought I would peek in at Fox 13's Washington Sports Wrap Thursday night, in light of the debut of KING5's new morning hour, The Ultimate Seattle Sports Show.

I was immediately surprised to see Alyssa Charlston-Smith hosting.  I thought she had left to be the new analyst for Seattle Storm TV.

Strong opening graphic and video billboard of multiple stories.  Teased an exclusive interview with Ben Horney, the Front Office Sports journalist who reported that two major media moguls were bidding for the Seahawks.    It was sound from the Fox 13 Live Desk story from earlier in the day.  Good breaking news, discussed his sourcing, etc.  It was later refuted another reporter and Meta on social media

Ethan McReynolds with a standard press conference package on Hawks' draft choice Jadarian Price.

Quick voiceover on the female Kraken asst. coach who's leaving in hopes of a head coaching job elsewhere.

First block rounds out with brief stories about Storm and Mariners.

Overall, very newsy block for sure.  Produced with pace.

Second block opens with a quick vo-sot on the Windermere Cup, then onto a double box interview with Heidi Watney, part of Apple TV Friday Night Baseball broadcast team for the Mariners game vs. KC.    There was some Cole Young talk, opinion on the AL and Ms season so far and Friday's game outlook. Good pub for Apple TV, that's for sure, saved Apple from buying a commercial, right?

FInal block

Sports Director Aaron Levine checks in with a pre-taped commentary on the Seahawks draft.  Good, educated take.  It then evolved into a quad box with three other Fox sports guys from SFO, LA and Phoenix weighing in on the draft for their home teams.  They do a lot of this for the show, especially on football, of course, featuring the NFC West reporters.   They cut out of it abruptly, however.  Maybe time was running out.

Alyssa, who continues to look totally awkward and uncomfortable in that uncomfortable director's chair, offered a quick goodbye.  She opened the show standing at the keywall, so I would opt to keep her that way throughout.  Looks stronger.    BTW, alll of Fox 13's studio chairs are awful.

Meanwhile, I am told there has been no formal announcment about Alyssa leaving the station, but, supposedly, word is she does NOT want to work part-time.  It's apparently yet to be resolved, but the WNBA season is looming.

Anyway, the program had a lot of variety and timely info.  Good sports wrap, living up to its title.  Can't really knock it.  Does its job, is what it is.

The K5 show is sports talk for a streamer since it's on TV on the morning. Different, non comparable, shows.

  1. Thank you for taking an updated look at the Washington Sports Wrap. It sounds like it is offering up a solid nightly dose of sports news and commentary for our local fanbases. I predict that this show will be able to hold its own against KING's new offering given their very different formats and timeslots. There is room for more than one daily sports show in this market.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

A Farewell to this Fox 13 Seattle host

Carly Henderson - co-host of Studio 13: Live - was laid off in the recent KCPQ expansion which we broke.  She posts her goodbye on FB.  She never really clicked on the pay for play lifestyle mid-morning show.   It will be cut to a half hour for awhile and moved to 10 a.m, according to reports, before moving back to 11 on Aug. 4.  And I am told it will remain 30 minutes, not be re-expanded to an hour.   Thank goodness. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16HFRSYM8x
