Who approved this poor Seattle TV story that doesn't pass muster at all?

Here's a story about a consignment store that has been open on the troubled Aurora Ave corridor.  The IG video has reportedly gotten 2 million Instagram views, but the story is hopelessly weak, talks with no customers, no neighboring business owners, no neighborhood council oversight types and no word if it is at all profitable.   Though not mentioned, the store is in the 10001 block of Aurora, three blocks from a dilaptatated seedy strip joint and five from a troubled Arco gas station that has seen violence, a few doors down from a massage parlor on Northgate Way.

I find it journalistically insipid and worse, it was repeated on Sunday news with the contextual reporter open and close removed with a fake sig out.  In other words gutted.  2:20 originally, 1:28 edited down.  Not to mention it used IG video provided by the store.   Owner should have bought an ad, but didn't have to with this PR puffery.

I applaud the effort of the owner but decry the terrible, one interview fits all report, and using it as reduced filler on Sunday.  Nice, lazy work from KOMO and reporter Moreno.    Also on station website.

  1. I know it’s been a while since you’ve been covering news in Seattle, but that block is incredibly violent. You bring some valid points about the reporting, but to pretend this is away from the violence… is just pure fantasy on your part. 2. That was exactly my point, friend. What are you talking about? Can you read the post, please? I drive past there to a docs office and I know the area and frankly fear it. Your comment is misplaced.

    1. This is what I wrote.. "Though not mentioned, the store is in the 10001 block of Aurora, three blocks from a dilapitated seedy strip joint and five from a troubled Arco gas station that has seen violence, a few doors down from a massage parlor on Northgate Way."

  3. While it is great to see someone trying to make Aurora Ave a better place, one business owner alone isn't going to change things. Its going to take a combination of businesses, residents, law enforcement, social services, amd city leaders coming together to make lasting change on that deeply trobled street. While I agree that KOMO's report here is flawed, it could be just the begining of a larger series of stories about what it will really take to improve Aurora Ave, and the people who are already having a go at it. Those stories, should KOMO wish to pursue them, could fill in the gaps this story didn't cover.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Frankie Flees KIRO7

UPDATE:  Frankie got married!!! Acting on tips from two of my loyal readers, I see that Weekend Weather Wizard Frankie Katafias is indeed missing from the KIRO 7 website.  Freelancer Scott Haveson filled in this past Sunday and we know that reporter Brandon Thompson has hit the weather wall in the past as a fill-in.   No word on if Frankie fled on her own or was told to.   She came to Seattle in 2022, so maybe it was a three-year deal that ended?
