I only lasted 18 minutes aboard the ARC

I decided to take a quick, fresh peek at KOMO'/KUNS/CW ARC Seattle Wednesday morning.  I was going to review the full two hours, but I was turned off from the jump with the inane comment from co-anchor Tyrah Majors following a very halting, awkward, disjointed live shot by a seemingly frustrated Natalie Fahmy about a shooting that happened yesterday at a building where the Seattle Mayor was speaking.  The live shot included a trash collector  walking in the background, BTW.   Live TV, folks.

Then McCarron turned to Tyrah and related how they talk often about how to curb continuing gun violence in the city and she responded:  "It's certainly an issue and, unfortunately, a lot of these leaders don't see it going away completely soon."   Certainly an issue?  Really? Thanks Captain Obvious.   "Leaders don't see it going away?"  "Completely soon?"  Profound insights, indeed.  Yikes.  She was totally unprepared to talk about the subject.

Next up at about 13 minutes in, I had to sit through a 5:30, yes 5:30, segment on KOMO winning a rowing race yesterday against the other stations and the fun of rowing, featuring a long interview with a rowing expert and advocate.  Sure gets me ready for my day at 8:15!   A segment with zero impact on anyone at 8 in the morning.  I know the show is conceived as community-oriented, but this was a voice-over max.  Not worth the time.   Put it all at the end of the second hour if you must.   I know it was a Windermere Cup preview to some extent but not when they talk about the excitement you feel on the water.

That was it for me.   18 minutes of bad TV.   I shall not reboard the ARC again.  It's a top 15 market, folks and this is trash.

  1. Sounds like the morning edition of ARC hasn't improved much from its debut. The 10pm edition is better.

  2. As Ted Baxter once said “On TV you talk until you have something to say” — even if, in the end, you really have nothing to say at all. A vapid waste of electrons.

  3. The show is only an hour in the morning, they shortened it about a month ago

    1. Cable grid dies not indicate that. I will take your word for it. Shorter the better, if that's the case Filler on a non player

    2. So its only on for one hour now? I thought it was on for three hours (7am to 10am). Its listed that way in the KUNS programming guide on the On TV Tonight website (I looked, but couldn't find a KUNS programming guide on KOMO's website...there should be one).

    3. Wayne you were watching the wrong channel at the wrong hour. You missed out a very entertaining segment. Right around 8 this morning on Komo I was waiting for the weather report. All of a sudden the Live With Kelly and Mark intro started, then a 7 day forecast was on the screen and then the most entertaining of all happened. George Waldenberger was standing in front of the forecast info talking to someone about a sport. What sport? Don't know but judging by your comment, it was rowing as he was explaining that 40% was in the legs, 20% stomach, 10% arms or something like that. Someone walked by and he said "Hi, how ya doing?" and then went back to talking to that person (who was off camera) about the sport. I just sat there amazed at what I was watching. Kid you not. I was looking forward to reading your blog tonight because I just knew someone would post about it. Well, guess I was the only one who saw it. Have to wonder how all that happened. It must have lasted for over a minute. Anonymous Cisley

    4. ARC still on at 930 Thursday morning but it's branded as 'previously recorded' with an upper right bug. Meanwhile, it appears there was an on air meltdown, earlier and I appreciate that post. Yikes.

    6. Good update, thanks. Obviously, then, they have scaled down the show. and that's smart. Never needed a two-hour live slot from the jump. Ii's a placeholder with reduced effort and fewer resources.

    7. Thank you, Wayne and Anyonomus, for clearing up the current status of ARC Seattle's morning edition. I hope that the show will eventually improve.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

A Farewell to this Fox 13 Seattle host

Carly Henderson - co-host of Studio 13: Live - was laid off in the recent KCPQ expansion which we broke.  She posts her goodbye on FB.  She never really clicked on the pay for play lifestyle mid-morning show.   It will be cut to a half hour for awhile and moved to 10 a.m, according to reports, before moving back to 11 on Aug. 4.  And I am told it will remain 30 minutes, not be re-expanded to an hour.   Thank goodness. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16HFRSYM8x
