Popular TV reporter from PDX passes away

Grant McOmie, longtime outdoors journalist and personality at both KGW and KATU in Portland, has died at 73 after a brief illness. His grants Getaways were legendary features. NWCN also aired them back in the day.  He knew Oregon, for sure.

  1. Grant had the best assignment on Northwest television, covering the outdoors in Oregon! From hunting to fishing to admiring scenery to eating Northwest deliacies, he did it all with the biggest smile and plenty of laughs! There will never be a other outdoors journalist quite like him! I always enjoyed seeing his segments on NWCN and later on KGW's YouTube channel. He will be sorely missed. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

    1. I never got to see any of McOmie's work and it is sad to hear of his passing. Another "Grant" that I like to throw in was Grant Goodeve. If you think that "Evening" showcased the quirkiness of our city and its residents, "Northwest Backroads" was the show that showcased the natural beauty and what makes living here unique. It was watching NWB where I first learned about Deception Pass, Mount Rainier National Park, Leavenworth, just to name a few.

    2. Some of McOmie's more recent work should be available on KGW's YouTube channel.

I didn't get to see much of Northwest Backroads or Grant Goodeve before the show ended its run. But from what I did see, I could tell it was a great show that showcased just how scenic and special the place we call home really is.

    3. Grant's Oregon shows and Goodeve's PNW travels were weekend staples at NWCN.

  2. Sad news but thanks for the update. I used to watch his outdoors segments when I was much younger living in the Portland market. He had great knowledge of Oregon’s forests and quite a unique voice.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

A Farewell to this Fox 13 Seattle host

Carly Henderson - co-host of Studio 13: Live - was laid off in the recent KCPQ expansion which we broke.  She posts her goodbye on FB.  She never really clicked on the pay for play lifestyle mid-morning show.   It will be cut to a half hour for awhile and moved to 10 a.m, according to reports, before moving back to 11 on Aug. 4.  And I am told it will remain 30 minutes, not be re-expanded to an hour.   Thank goodness. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16HFRSYM8x
