Just a snapshot, but Chris Daniels, who I have admittedly criticized here before, nailed the substance behind the Holloway umbrella deal for Climate Pledge Monday (paving the way for Sonics) and the Ferguson presser about Gov's talks with Adam Silver. KING could only muster rookie Sebastian Robertson (Drew Mikkelsen must have had the day off), Portland transplant Brandon Thompson at KIRO (well they have no sports, anyway) and Fox 13 (I missed WA Sports Wrap), from which I could not determine who covered. Must be spring break.
Kudos to Chris for his work on covering these important developments. Today was a good demonstration of what you can do when you're a subject-matter expert on a particular story.
ReplyDeleteWould agree. Wayne, when you talk about Daniels' foray into sports and whatnot, yesterday was an exhibit A for why that is. Chris Daniels is BY FAR at this point the go-to reporter in this market for this particular subject as he has been covering it since the Sonics left in 2008. So much so at this point once this is all over he'll be able to write a book about it all if he wants to and probably make a ton of loot doing it. As you probably saw, KOMO is sending him to New York to cover it. Do you think any other Seattle station is doing that? Probably not. And what's more, Vegas has a Sinclair station too (the NBC down there). Would have to assume with Daniels being a national Sinclair guy also, Sinclair probably didn't send a reporter from Vegas to NY and Daniels will handle their coverage also. In total, Chris Daniels knows this subject off the back of his hand and viewers see the results of that compared to the other stations in town.
DeleteI think Levine and Egan may go, but haven't seen that yet. You're likely right about Daniels covering for Vegas as well. Makes sense on multiple fronts. I won't surrender that Tamurian has been stepped on in other cases which are more sports than business, but I get it.
DeleteAaron Levine tells me he is not going to NYC. Waiting to hear from Egan. Meanwhile KIRO says it will be live at 1130 am Weds to report on the vote and are showing a countdown clock during newscasts on Tues.

DeleteNewark Airport might not be the best location for a report on NBA league expansion. But at least Chris has made it to New York now to report on the all-important vote.
DeleteChris and Niko are an excellent team on this story. Chris understands the political angle while Niko has made great strides as the sports director since he’s so great at relationship building with the young players and coaches. However, if the Sonics DO come back, KOMO will really need to get back to having a second sports reporter.

DeleteKOMO really does need a second dedicated sports reporter. Niko does a great job, but with so much happening in the Seattle sports scene these days, one dedicated sports reporter just isn't enough to be able to keep up with it all.
DeleteAs for KING not doing Sonics coverage off the top after the Kraken game with more sports fans likely tuning in than usual, on the eve of the all-important vote, that is a surprise. I wouldn't have expected KING to drop the ball on such a big story. I didn't tune in myself, so I can only hope what they led with was at least as important.
