Gotta love the station with no sports department

Oh, the irony as the two giddy KIRO morning news anchors wear Sonics apparel waiting for the NBA presser.  And a pentabox with Horcher (far right) wearing some, too, not to mention Chapman (lower left).  Brandon  Thompson (lower right) apparently didn't get the memo.  Of course KIRO sent no one to cover the New York event. But boosterism overkill prevails.  Credibility takes another hit.

Kudos to KING for playing it straight on set with Two, count em TWO sports anchors.

Fox 13 did not break in for the presser, staying with a game show on the flagship, while shifting coverage to its duopoly station

Meanwhile the competition got to see KOMO reporter Chris Daniels introduce himself and ask a question of the Commish.

  1. KOMO is airing the coverage live but KIRO management, what are they thinking. Full stop. A sale of that station can not come soon enough

  2. I did see KIRO take at least some of the Adam Silver live presser when I switched around. They broke in with the studio coverage at 11:30, interrupting a soap.

  3. Thompson may not have gotten the memo on wearing Sonics attire, but at least he maintained his journalistic credibility, and lessened the hit to KIRO's journalistic credibility, today by missing the memo, so good on him for that.

KING's studio looks really good with that green, gold, and blue backdrop. I hope that, when the time comes for Sonics games to air on local TV, KING puts in a bid for them.

    1. Nexstar would make that call. Hmm

    2. In full agreement with IDC9. The lengths KIRO seemed to go to yesterday to try to make themselves credible were off the charts. They stayed with the presser until it ended and on the other side was Horcher with a bunch of Sonics legends including Kemp. As for KING, that was a real good use of the sports talent there with Pae. Egan probably gave both she and Arielle an education on the set during their coverage about this subject

  4. KIRO barely has a news department anymore, so no surprise its sports effort is so pathetic. Are Apollo/Cox still looking to sell? I’ve lost track but the cost cutting would seem to indicate someone, somewhere is looking to goose the financial performance by squeezing out every last buck.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
