Olympics unplugged opinion

I must admit I did not watch one second. Just not a fan of the greed and hype and the guy in charge in LA now.  Also missed every KING story, though I'm sure Egan and Jake worked hard and did good stuff.   I know I am in the minority, but I simply don't connect with Norway winning skiing or the fuss over curling, half pipe and other manufactured competitions.  Olympics and Guthrie dominated NBC news for two weeks.   Johnny Weir and Snoop best they can do?   Thoughts?

  1. Nice catch Wayne. As the saying goes, "Measure twice, cut once."

  2. I enjoyed the Olympics. Too commercial, sure, but that’s who pays the bills. Streaming on Peacock was nice - you could choose what to watch and when. Local
TV totally irrelevant and not even on my mind. Not sure it’s worth the investment but I guess if you are KING why not. Might as well take car advantage of being on the host network

  3. I also watched on Peacock. I didn’t miss seeing anything watching the events on a delayed basis, since the results were already in the news. And because I went for the Peacock Premium Plus plan, I watched it all without commercials. I know it’s cord-cutters like me who are blamed for threatening linear TV, but life is too short for cheesy ads and cheesier athlete promotions.

  4. Largest audience for NBC (across all platforms) since 2014 Sochi Olympics.

  5. I only saw a few short snippets of the games this year. They honestly felt like an afterthought with all of the news going on outside of the games (Nancy Guthrie, Trump, tarriff ruling, Seahawks, millionaires tax, etc.). Before the games got going, there seemed to be almost no hype for them, as if the American people had all broadly forgotten that the games were even going to be taking place, which struck me as being highly unusual. I have no doubt the 2028 summer games in Los Angeles will be hyped extensively given that they'll be taking place on American soil.

  6. Yes, I do think the Super Bowl run up squashed some of the usual hype leading up to the opening of the Games, at least in Seattle.

    1. I agree that the Super Bowl definitley put a quash on some of the Olympics hype here in the Northwest. But it felt like there was also little hype for the Games on a national scale until the day that began.

    2. Agreed, it was a head-on collision of inopportune timing.

  7. I watched very little. Winter sports just aren’t that interesting to me visually. But I am looking forward to catching the summer Olympics, especially given their location.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
