New baseball TV channel in the on-deck circle

Per the Seattle TImes the Mariners will be creating a linear Mariners TV channel replacing Root Sports, but viewers must still await deals with major providers (like Xfinity and Direct TV) to carry it along with the accompanying cost.   Mariners.TV will be the streaming platform for $19.99 a month

  1. Its good to hear that the Mariners have found a new home on television. I just hope that the new channel won't cost cable and satellite subscribers as much as the streaming platform will. $20 a month is a lot to swallow, especially if you're not a sports fan, or if the team's performance on the field takes a hit.

  2. I miss Root. It will likely be 20 bucks on cable/sat, too, and that's onerous with prices high everywhere.

    1. I just hope at that price, it is made to be a premium, add-on channel, like HBO, and not a standard channel. As much as people like the Mariners right now, a $20 a month increase in cable and satellite bills could quickly change that.

  3. What the M's have set up is exactly the same the other teams working directly with MLB are doing. So what this will mean linear-wise is cable/satellite/streaming distributors will have to agree to carry the channel with MLB as it is a dedicated channel. This is where things will probably get sticky I expect especially with Comcast. Other teams though have as part of this allowed for limited OTA simulcasts so I'd expect this here as well.

    1. I can't imagine Comcast/Xfinity will be a partner who wants to play ball. There will be a cost, right? And if they do truly end up on a channel like 627 again, maybe Red Zone like where it is dark unless there is a game, then what was really accomplished? Other than the baseball team laid off a lot of talented people and then hired them back as freelancers for less pay to do the same job.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
