The Seattle Emmy Racket Grows

Just what we need, two more categories for the NATAS NW Emmy contest: Talk Show and Contact Shorts.   Does this mean New Day on KING and Studio 13 Live can enter??   I hope not.  Too many paid segments.  And I am trying to think if I have seen a 'content short' on any television show in the market.  Correct me if I'm wrong.  Is this like TikTok TV??   Crank up extra entry fees and dinner tickets!!

Anyway, here's the NATAS explanations. Read if you dare:

Categories

We have two new categories:

Content Shorts - category 55

Talk Show - category 49

Content Shorts #55

For excellence in short-form content created with a social-first strategy. While entries are not required to have been published on a specific platform (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X), the video content is designed for a social media audience. This content is served to viewers based on interests and follows rather than being consumed via scheduled time slots. Content shorts follow trending formats, include a strong hook and are shareable. Content re-edited for the purpose of distribution on a social media platform does not, in and of itself, indicate a social-first strategy.

Entrants may submit a single Content Short providing its original length is between :30 seconds and 5 minutes.

Entrants may submit a composite of Content Shorts providing the individual shorts are related in topic and/or part of a related campaign. The total running time of the composite must be between :30 seconds and 5 minutes.

Content Shorts with an original length of less than :30 seconds are only eligible if they are submitted as part of a composite as noted above. (Example: Five (5) related Content Shorts - each with an original length of :06 seconds - may be compiled and submitted as one entry with a running time of :30 seconds.)

CHAPTER NOTE: EXAMPLES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

• Content highlighting regional travel

• Content highlighting regional restaurants

• Content highlighting regional 'things to do'

• Videos exploring 'behind the scenes' of regional sports teams

• 'Get to know us' sports teams/department/organization videos

• News station digital teams social first content

Talk Show:

For excellence in talk/dialogue driven programs featuring hosts who engage viewers on various topics. Elements may include but are not limited to interviews, demonstrations, viewer call-ins, audience Q&A, social media participation, guest experts, guest performers, live shots, talent interaction, etc. Some pre-recorded video content is permitted, but the program should be at least 75% dialogue driven, and largely unscripted. Entrants may submit one episode, or a composite of no more than three episodes from the eligibility period. Video podcasts that fit the criteria of this category are eligible.

NOTE: This category is intended for “talk” programs featuring more eclectic elements that go beyond the Interview/Discussion category. Example (national program): The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Comments

  1. I have no doubt KING is already getting to work on planning content that could be entered in these new categories. They do seem to like entering awards competitions more than any other station in town, and they have the resources to make content for these new categories.

New Day Northwest will undoubtedly see a segment or two entered in the talk show category since KING already produces that show, and it doesn't feature segments that would qualify.

As for the content shorts category, I'm not immediately sure what KING could make to enter into the contest, but I have no doubt that they will come up with something.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
