My TV media Christmas Poem

T'was the time before Christmas
And all thru the stations
Lots of new faces
To cover anchor vacations

The bosses were gone and the newsroom was quiet...
They pay us so little, we're all on a diet...

They make us wear jackets
With company logos
But DON'T ask for more money
Raises are no-gos

The laptops keep grinding, with much news to share..
It's already on phones, so viewers don't care

Some say that 'human' news writing's outdated...
Cuz AI makes it all automated.

Muir tops the Net news,
But Llamas must try
And Bari's in charge of the bloodshot EYE

Paramount wants to buy it all up,
Netflix hates their big 'interrupt.'
And Trump, we know, surely likes Ellison
Something the Netflix boys won't be relishin'

The linear world keep on screaming
Cuz the young folks only care about streaming.
You Tube's a fave, no doubt about it.
Despite its high price, go on and flout it.

Meanwhile, CNN's failing,
MSNow likely flailing,
The FOXies keep railing
News Nation keeps bailing

So, as corporate closes their books on the year,
They leave the office with plenty of fear.
But they try to relax while riding their limos,
To make sure sales keeps pushing the demos...

Not just selling viewers but social impressions
The sales guys are daily fighting depression
Ratings no longer go thru the roof
Streaming live sports is DVR-proof

More GMs are morphing to regional veeps
News bosses too are making those leaps
But I heard them explain as they took all the cash
Merged jobs often just go in the trash

They plead FCC, oh please raise the cap!
When we get more stations,
It's a victory lap.

Will the new year bring a news panacea?
Or will viewers just offer a real terse “We'll see ya.”
Elections will certainly bring on more dough
And also the games of the Winter big O.

But as 25 ends, what’s the big, final call?
Is local news better or the typical fall?

We already know the one constant is change...
So try something new, don't stay in your lanes...

But we still hear the bigwigs as they soar out of sight...
We're goin' to keep slicin' till we get it more tight...

So do your best NOW to spread some good cheer...
Make sure the end of TV news isn't near.

                  Merry Christmas!

  1. This is the best poem I've read all year! Timely and topical, in perfect rhyme and rhythm.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
