A brand new TV traffic reporter drives into Seattle



Nick Allard can go back to just doing morning weather at KIRO 7 instead of double duty in traffic as Paola Tristan Arruda joins as the new traffic anchor.  It's good to see another new hire at 7.   Meterologist Robert Van Winkle recently came here from Florida.  Perhaps the station has finally gotten the go ahead to address some of its recurring problems of short staffing.

Ms. Arruda previously worked at WESH in Orlando/Daytona and WGAL in Lancaster, PA.

    Mike B., I accidentally deleted your comment about remembering helicopters for traffic coverage back in the day. SKY KING took off and landed just over my fifth floor office at NWCN. Whoosh.

      I miss the days when KOMO, KING, and KIRO had helicopters and would use them for traffic coverage. They were always useful, especially in areas where traffic cameras didn't exist or weren't working. I hope at least one of the stations will eventually find a way to restore helicopter coverage for traffic and breaking news.

    I've noticed that Robert has been handling some of the traffic reporting since he joined KIRO. He's been doing quite well, but it will be great for KIRO to have a dedicated traffic reporter again. Welcome to Seattle, Paola!

    Had not noticed that...good fill in work by him, apparently. That's for the update. Now KIRO gets some stable help and a backup for Nick. We will see Robert a lot during the holiday weeks, I expect. Last one in gets the bad shifts!

      I reckon you're right. I also reckon we'll see a freelancer or two. Perhaps another appearence from Ed Muir? That would be a great Christmas treat.

 "I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

  So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
