Her goodbye post below! After an almost five-year stint, FOX 13 meteorologist and part-time news anchor Abby Acone ends her run there with a final show on this Sunday morning. Married earlier this month, she left no word on what's next. Not sure if it is fully her decision, but I'm told she had 'favored nation' status with news management. Before joining 13 in December of 2021, she worked three years at KOMO and also did a stint in Tri-Cities. Fittingly, this last shot on IG is studio appropriate. I've been frequently critical of her on this site for using the station's studio to post questionable videos (IMO), but for now, good luck. Listeners seem to be figuring out who they want to listen to on the radio news front. KIRO-AM's ratings are going up, while KNWN's are dropping. Both stations have very good lineups now, but the KIRO brand is more entrenched in the local media landscape. Rebranding KOMO radio to KNWN was a necessary move when Sinclair sold KOMO radio, but listeners need to be reminded that KNWN is, to a great extent, what KOMO radio used to be. They need a major marketing campaign to attract listeners.
ReplyDeleteAs for KUOW, boy are they doing good in the ratings right now! People seem to really be rallying around them as they navigate this bold new world of no federal funding for public media.
Seattle is high intelligence markert and KUOW is certainly a solid choice for the straight stuff for any demo. Hopefully the numbers will motivate more donors to offset the cuts.
ReplyDeleteI hope they do too. ith Cascade PBS ending their long form written content, I could see some people switching to KUOW if other, non-public media outlets don't appeal to them.
DeleteKNKX does good work too for the size of its newsroom and mixed format with jazz. But there's no denying that KUOW is the big boy in the room when it comes to public media news in Seattle.
DeleteI find KIRO FM is a tuff listen on weekdays. Ursula is the sole exception. I usually listen to 710 in the early morning, as much as I like Charlie and Manda , I find the format to be uninviting for me. But I’m old, and occasionally in the way.

Radio has always been thought of as the intimate medium as it feels like the person who was on the air was talking directly to you. When television came around, it came with the added bonus that we could now see the pictures that move to accompany the information being given, particularly when it came to live breaking events. Ursula is a rare gem around KIRO (she's been there since 1987-1988?) and one of the best when it comes to local radio news. She has that command and warmth in her voice that makes you feel she is talking to you in each of the stories. Her radio partner, Gee is nothing more than someone that just got lucky (even after hearing for the 100th time on the connections he made when detailing cars and getting acquainted with the Seahawks players got him a radio slot). Charlie and Manda are no Dave and Colleen, but they're professionals and make the morning news their own and that's matters. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but ONE word (and hopefully the correct word) can create a thousand pictures and that is why radio news matters today. Cheers!
