The Continuing Saga of Eric

Is KIRO's Eric Thomas back as permanent weekend evening anchor?   Last week it was Jason Sloss, but after a maternity leave stint filling in for DeeDee Sun on mornings, Thomas is back on the big desk.   I think this has a lot to do with fall football being. in high gear on weekends and his previous sports anchoring expertise. Any KIRO insiders have any details?

Meanwhile KIRO keeps pumping up the new Waterfront partnership with their two lead news anchors Saturday night.  Partnership????

And they threw in paid for Steals and Deals from corporate earlier in the show.    Journalism be damned!!!

  1. KIRO has been more excited about the new waterfront park opening than any other local news outlet that I've seen. Its a major milestone in the transformation of the Seattle waterfront, which, as a whole, is a big story. But KIRO's intense focus on this particular aspect of it is getting to be a little much.

  2. I noticed the banner at the bottom of the screen stated much of the first ten minutes of the 5pm news were “sponsored” by meet me at the waterfront. So in my opinion not really news and not really appropriate for a news program

    1. I agree with you on that. This special coverage sounds like it should have been a special program and not part of a regular newscast.

  3. KIRO. Is a few blocks away from the water front. They don’t have to pay for all that travel time. Every dollar counts!

    1. By that logic, if the new waterfront park was in elsewhere in our region, they wouldn't have covered it as much because its too far away from the studio. I say "as much" because they do have crews leave Seattle city limits to cover stories across the region every day, and a new waterfront park opening in another community in our region is a story that could, if it ever happens, warrant such coverage.

  4. They heavily covered the debut of the Waterfront, so it appears to be a partnership of some type. that partnership. I don't think distance was a factor.

  5. Eric’s a good anchor. Nice to see him on the weekend desk. Feels like the real deal when you watch him.

  6. I wouldn’t exactly call this a saga - Eric was hired specifically to replace Chris Francis on weekends, as management had already planned to let him go. The schedule adjustments were simply to cover DeeDee’s maternity leave. There’s nothing particularly newsworthy here. What is noteworthy, though, is KIRO’s announcement about Deborah Horne’s departure. She’s been a staple in this market for decades. I wonder what ultimately led her to make that decision?

  7. i think he was hired to be a swing man....sports AND news to help on weekends in either slot. But he wound up anchoring weekend news much more often, which led him to the a.m. fill-in for DeeDee.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
