Daniels' grows his sports rep

Did not take long for KOMO senior news reporter to inject himself into Sports anchor Niko Tamurian's territory on the Friday news live from T-Mobile.    I don't care if they have a podcast together.  Or if Daniels had a separate story.  Let the sports guy do the honors.  Daniels wants to work for a team, I swear.    Niko always stresses the team effort, but if KOMO wants to build him in a key sports moment for the market and its audience, they are missing an real opportunity.   IMHO.

  1. Which team might Daniels want to work for? My mind goes to a basketball team, assuming Seattle gets one again, considering how much he has covered the long saga of bringing the NBA back to town.

  2. Don’t understand your issue with Chris. Why does everything need to go into silos?

  3. Here's my issue: Chris is the SENIOR NEWS REPORTER and does national stuff for SInclair. SO why is he always posting obvious sports information and horning in on sports stories online and on the air. Why is Niko not getting showcased by his own station as their #1sports guy? He is constantly upstaged by Daniels and other news anchors on Storm pre-games. Woudn't you want to build him at KOMO as THE guy. I can't imagine KING's Jim Forman, who was senior reporter, co-anchoring with Paul Silvi on a big sports story. It is non sensical. If I were Tamurian, I would ask for independence. At Sinclair, that could be a death, so he goes along to get along, using the TEAM line to justify it.

  4. This post is full of misinformation which just passes as your opinion. I'm not a KOMO loyalist or anything like that but I happened to be watching this on this night last week. Chris had a report on tax revenue for the Seattle for the upcoming playoff games, nothing at all about the team nor really sports for that matter..The venue just kind of made sense based on it being a Mariners impact. Nikko handled the x's and o's of the team and their playoff outlook---the sports side.
I thought it was a cool and different way of doing team coverage. I notice you post about Chris in sports a lot, and if anyone is doing Nikko T (as super talented as he is) a disservice it's you harping on an issue made up in your own head. I feel like Nikko's been on top of it with all the teams and especially the Ms in the champagne celebrations and so on with no Daniels around and all you're focused on is worrying about where Chris is. I think Nikko T is one of the most talented in the market and that will serve him well the longer he's here. I've talked to the sports guys at KING before and they love him (they just wished he had a little more help.) KOMO is lucky to have him, he appears to have an incredibly bright future in Seattle, why wouldn't KOMO showcase him with their top news reporter?

  5. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I would disagree about 'misinformation.' It was my OPINION only. I like Niko a lot and my post is clearly points out that he can effectively LEAD the sports coverage without a partner, not just tag teaming with Chris or co-host with news anchors on Storm pre-games. I want to see him boosted as the clear #1, but KOMO doesn't seem to want to do that. He should have been on solo close up to start that particular segment, then bring Chris in to intro his story. Then they could be together with Niko driving the bus. In other words, you don't showcase a talent by not giving them the full stamp. I am probably speaking more as a former TV news director here who has hired and worked with sports anchors, whom I know wanted their full space to lead big stories. Again, I do appreciate the chance to explain my position to you. Keep reading and contributing. I will try to hold down the 'harping.'

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
