Ranji Sinah fills in on KIRO weekend weather at the incredible shrinking station. No official word yet on any hire.
"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks. Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas. Her last Facebook posts are 12/17. She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO. Looks like her decision. Wants a new chapter. She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO. Perhaps Stella Sun will move there. She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.
Even though the KIRO ship is slowly sinking, at least they're doing their weathercasts LIVE, unlike KOMO which had Theron flying solo on the anchor desk on Saturday and having a pre-taped weathercast by chief met Shannon O'Donnell done on Friday night. I know LIVE is always best and given that KIRO has a 7pm newscast during the week, so why doesn't chief met Morgan Palmer do a pre-taped weathercast in between 8pm and the LIVE 11pm newscast and feed it for the Saturday and Sunday evening newscast? Unless a dramatic change in weather or a not-before-mentioned bomb cyclone forms, just a thought.
ReplyDeleteThey could. But it would be very out of date by the time it would go to air. The weather is too erratic to be taped in advance.
DeleteAt least you don't need to worry about losing your job if the forecast is wrong. Either that or you can do the weather in Los Angeles, where nine months of the year, there is any weather.
DeleteI was surprised to see morning Reporter Savannah Welch doing the weather on KING 5 on Saturday evening during the 5 pm newscast. Maybe all 4 full time weather reporters were across the street watching Ichiro get inducted into the M's Hall of Fame.
ReplyDeleteMs. Welch actually has a Mississippi State certification for weather (as many do), so she can handle it and has filled in previously, i believe.
DeleteDid not see Sinha this weekend but I have seen him fill in for Allard multiple times on the noon show and think he is handling that duty well. Same for Ottilie whenever she has had to fill in in that slot. At a bare minimum, IMO KIRO should work with those two to get them their CBM broadcast meteorology certification from Mississippi State because it will be handy for them for their future stops in this industry. They both have done fantastic under the circumstances they've been put in.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree he does a credible job, and as I posted last week, KIRO has someone on the way to take over the weekend weather role. We shall see.
DeleteIf they want the certification, then it would be in KIRO's interest to help them get it. Then they wouldn't have to rely on freelancers (not that the freelancers have done a bad job...they've done well) as much to cover when Morgan, Nick, or the third meteorologist (whoever that ends up being) are away. It would also be easier to do tag-team coverage during our region's fall and winter storms.
DeleteA freelancer would need to be paid. Poor old reporters likely just get a “comp day” they can never claim due to chronic staff shortages.
ReplyDeleteUsually, it's smarter to simply change the reporter's schedule to work Weds-Sun, so it falls into their normal compensation, but comp days catch up fast.
