KING does a lot of great work, for sure, but they flood both the Murrow and Emmy Award competitions and usually win a bunch. That's the philosophy. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
Winning the National Murrow for Overall Excellence is truly a feather in K5’s cap. Regardless of the number of submissions, the competition is simply tougher — with far fewer categories and far higher standards. By contrast, the regional Emmys have a much lower bar and are hardly a reliable measure of quality.
ReplyDeleteKING won 11 of 14 REGIONAL Murrows this award season, which certainly showcases their great work, but also indicates their hunger for piling up trophies. Hard for judges to ignore that 11 win number. The old hallway outside the station on Dexter was loaded with Murrow placques.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many award plaques they have on display at their current studios in SODO. They surely don't have enough room to display all of them!

ReplyDeleteGood points. I haven't gotten the impression that Nexstar is as into Murrows, Emmys, and the like. KING's appetite for these awards may be about to be surpressed.
ReplyDeleteFor the longest time, the Tegna powerhouse stations like KING, KARE, KUSA and WFAA permitted huge budgets for awards entries. You're right, Nexstar would be a different world. Not to menion, if major consolidation hits, the work submitted by stations will be compromised in various ways.
ReplyDeleteIt seems as though both Belo and Gannett, the precursors to Tegna, were both very much into the idea of winning regional and national awards. Both groups certainly did good work worthy of such awards. I hope that we'll at least continue to see award worthy journalism be carried out by the stations if and when Nexstar takes over, even if they don't enter the awards contests as often.
DeleteThe question is will any new owners de-emphasize investigative, in particular. Those long form reports take away from feeding the daily machine with likely fewer, combined staff members.
ReplyDeleteA very good question. Nexstar does have a couple of investigative units that produce long form reports at their stations in Chicago and Charlotte (there may be others, but those are the two that come to mind right now), so there is some hope.
