Here's the salary posted for the vacant News Director position at KING, now that Juile Wolfe has gone corporate:
Pay Range
$165,000 - $215,000 USD (Readers, do you think this is high, low or the approprate range for the market and do you think it is higher than the other Seattle stations?)

What the heck is going on here?
ReplyDeleteExtremely low. Aren’t other ND positions in the market at least 300k?
ReplyDeleteI think your number is way high, especially 1) given how cheap Sinclair is, 2) The major Cox reductions 3) Fox as a company pushes entertainment and sports more than news on their O&Os. I mean Erin and Abby are anchoring news, it's all consolidating. Again, just a guess.
DeleteThis pay range does seem a bit low for a legacy station in a top 20 market, but it also doesn't seem unreasonable in today's turbulent economic climate.
ReplyDeleteYou have the skills and the experience, at that very station. Looks like good money, but dealing with corporate -- how is your blood pressure?
ReplyDeleteIt's risky to come on board as a new ND with the appointment of a regional news VP and acorporate boss calling more of the shots, per the post here about Tegna reorg. Proceed with caution. Maybe the Asst. ND might take it, because of familiarity. Promotions from within help with stability in the midst of the changes coming. As far as the money goes, again, with a regional VP on board and presumably still parked in a KING office, I think the number if a bit higher than the low range. If it's a promotion, the $165 number works.
ReplyDeleteHa! I couldn't deal with the old Tegna corporate, let alone this one, if you are referring directly to me.
ReplyDeleteYes. I'm referring directly to your experience. Makes sense that you shy away from it though. You've had a taste of corporate nonsense. It's like getting a whiff of something stuck to your shoe. Been there, glad to be away from it.
DeleteThanks, JB?
DeleteWhen it comes to content, great ideas rarely — okay, never — come from a corporate content gaggle. Whoever takes this role is in for a headache: every day they'll have to decide which competing corporate voice in their head gets to steer the ship.
ReplyDeleteYes there will be politics from the GM and corporate, which makes for multiple ibuprofen hits each day. The best way to overcome this issue is to build really strong relationships with the staff and do lots of one-on-one and group trainings. In other words, bottom up management as much as possible. But it would be an enormous challenge to fend off the Barbarians at the Gate.
