I just don't get it. KOMO's Sports Director Niko Tamurian has weekend news anchor Michelle Esteban co-anchoring with him Saturday on the Seattle Storm pre-game.
Why? He can't do it solo?? Does management have no confidence in him? Do they put a female on the show because it is the WNBA? A DEI play? Is a male solo anchor inappropriate? Did the Storm insist on a female co-anchor??? I simply do not understand it. Niko can go it alone. Previously they had Kelly Koopmans with him. Niko has told me he doesn't mind; he's obviously a team player. Even Esteban can't figure it out, given this pic. I have honestly never seen this in a major market setting. Would they have put Molly Shen with Mike Ferreri if he was still there??? This, plus teaming him with sports wannabe senior news reporter Chris Daniels on a moribund podcast.
Her face says it all.
ReplyDeleteAre you serious? It's the WNBA. It's hard enough to watch the NBA. You tell me, are the ratings there to make it viable? How many players can you name on the team. I like sports and the only name I can think of is Sue Bird and I believe she retired a couple of years ago!
ReplyDeleteNot sure how you can call yourself a sports fan and — in this city — and not be sure whether Sue Bird retired last year or before that.
DeleteThe WNBA is awesome basketball, and *so* much more watchable (from an aesthetics standpoint) than the NBA. The NBA is all about athleticism: give the ball to LeBron on the wing and let him go one-on-one. (It’s better now, but a few years ago this was the preferred offensive set.) The WNBA involves actual movement, the need to consistently hit midrange shots, and full team play. This has been true for years.
The WNBA does seem to be expanding its reach and following, thanks in part to Caitlin Clark, but also thanks in part to the Seattle Storm, which is easily one of the most notable teams in the league. It is becoming increasingly viable to air the games and pre/post coverage. KOMO wouldn't be doing it otherwise.
DeleteKOMO has a partnership with the Storm and I just feel like something is a little fishy with news anchors joining the sports guy. I don't know what the ratings are because no station or team publishes the facts. Only the advertisers know for sure.
ReplyDeletePretty sure the producer just whispered the latest ratings in Michelle’s earpiece.
