Snapshot of Idaho Sentencing Coverage in Seattle

Just some observations from the morning TV (not streaming) coverage

Biggest surprise was checking KOMO and ARC and seeing no live coverage when I checked in around 8:30 a.m.  GMA was on KOMO and ARC was in regular programming.     Apparently they had no reporter in Boise because Hannah Knowles was doing live shots on ARC from the KOMO deck at the Space Needle.  At one point Hannah said, "All eyes were on BRYAN."  She calls this guy by his first name?  Inappropriate.   ARC went full live after the recess, pre-empting Seattle Refined reruns.  KOMO went to The View.

The other 3 channels were wall to wall from the outset with the courtroom testimony, which was intense, to say the least.

KING and KIRO had Jake Whittenberg and Gary Horcher live in Boise and both had analysts on set with the respective anchors to discuss the testimony.   KING had a former judge on set with Mimi Jung and KIRO had a Seattle U. law prof.   Elle Thomas, a main evening anchor, was brought in early to join Linzi Sheldon on 7.

Fox 13 carried it live.   I did not see a live reporter in Boise doing live shots, but I may have missed that switching around.   They promised reports from Shirah Matsuzawa who was on scene.

The quad box with different angles of the courtroom was well planned.  The family testimony was on a wide shot so as not to be intrusive with the high emotions.   In some states, only one camera is allowed, but this arrangment showed the defendant while the families spoke and even offered pictures of the victims on an overhead projector while the prosecution spoke.

After court adjourned, KING and KIRO continued coverage as family members addressed the media.  KING had a second reporter on scene, Sebastian Roberston was in the courtroom and then joined Whittenberg outside for that portion.

If I am wrong about any of this, please correct me.   A snapshot, nothing more.

  1. Thank you for providing this snapshot. It is always interesting to see how different stations cover the same story. I've been away from home this morning, and missed the live coverage. That being said, based on your snapshot, it looks like KOMO may have dropped the ball today. No reporter in Boise? Not even someone from their sister station there, KBOI? Even super short staffed KIRO managed to have their own reporter in Boise, so this really looks bad for KOMO.

  2. KOMO may have sent a reporter, but I did not see any live contributions from there. We may see one turn up for the evening news summary reports.

    1. That's a good point. It just doesn't make sense for KOMO not to have sent someone given the significant local interest in this story.

    2. Calling him by his first name? Unreal. Back in the day, all the bad guys were referred to by their middle names, usually “Wesley”, “Earl” (a lotta those), “David” or “Paul”. Being made into a three-namer on TV in the 70s and 80s was not good!

  3. An emotional wrenching story to view.

    1. Indeed. My sympathies are with the victims of this awful tragedy.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
