KIRO 7 went pretty much semi-wall to wall at the opening of the new Seattle Pier 58 Waterfront. The station trying to get back in the ballgame after so many internal issues, defections and bad hires, and also to promote the Torchlight Parade telecast on Saturday. Horcher and Monique and Morgan live at the pier and Sloss anchoring in studio. Tied to Seafair. Forced at times, but a noble effort.

Great to see KIRO making an effort to get back on their feet and prove that they can cover important local events. Bur going nearly wall to wall on Pier 58? Extended coverage is fine. Nearly wall to wall ignores so many other local stories that may have needed to be covered today.
ReplyDeleteFor local news to survive, going “big on the big” would seem a no-brainer. You simply have to offer live, in-depth coverage on big local events and news. Otherwise, why exist? But I’m guessing cost-cutting and hubbing will make this more and more uncommon.
ReplyDeleteI am sure a lot of long-time Seattle residents are still upset KIRO no longer carries the hydroplane races. Its always nice to see the Blue Angels when they come into town, but that is always weather pending on the kind of show we get.
ReplyDeleteKIRO always pulled out all the stops for the hydroplane races, and did a great job broadcasting Seattle's biggest event of the summer each year. While I'm glad that KONG was able to broadcast them last year, it still feels strange not to have them on KIRO anymore.
DeleteDoesn't KONG carry them....did last year if I remember correctly.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct. I watched on KONG last year. Hosted by Paul Silvi and Stephanie Strickland. Paul did a great job as usual.
DeleteStephanie Strickland? I remember her from KGW in Portland. I didn't know that she was up here now.
DeleteThat was where I remembered her from as well. I don’t think she is a regular here. She has coanchored the KING 5 4th of July fireworks and the hydro races the past few years though. Perhaps she has some type of in with someone at KING 5 to help with these one off shows.
DeleteSteph was a very talented anchor and reporter at Portland's sister station to KING. She left the business a long while back. I will check Seafair to see if she is back on KONG's hydro coverage. Not sure if she has been doing the fireworks shows, because I don't watch them.
