KNWN has now added longtime Seattle media man Scott Carty (pic below), who freelanced for me at the old NWCN among many other stops along the way in radio and TV. This new post supplants my previous one.
"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks. Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas. Her last Facebook posts are 12/17. She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO. Looks like her decision. Wants a new chapter. She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO. Perhaps Stella Sun will move there. She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.
Great to hear that Scott Carty is joining KNWN. Brian Calvert has been making some good hires there, and the battle between KNWN and KIRO 97.3 for radio news is getting exciting!
ReplyDeleteAs for Chris Nguyen, I don't have any insight as to what is going on with him, other than QZVX's mention that he is no longer with KNWN. I am bewildered that Nguyen has now burned through two short-lived roles in Seattle's media scene in less than a year. He seems like a nice person, and was good at Scripps News (where he worked before joining KOMO). I can't wrap my head around why he isn't lasting very long at the stations that he joins here.
Just posted that ex KOMO short-timer Chris Nguyen is out at KNWN, thus the opening. That guy has had a tough eight months, two jobs and two departures.
ReplyDeleteI hope that, if he decides to try his luck with a third station in this market, it will be a classic case of third times the charm, and it will work out for him.
DeleteSimply stated: Nguyen didn't "fit" at either KOMO or KNWN. He can try and make something out of himself at KIRO, but unless he wants to stay put in Seattle, he might as well do something in a non-broadcast profession like public relations.
DeleteThe only station left for Chris to try is KIRO as every other station in town is pretty much staffed up when it comes to anchors, but then again, he may not get the primary evening position since Horcher and Laven are already covering that. He may get the weekend slot given that another commentator on here believes that Sloss looks to be headed out. After all, KIRO can't do wrong since they already got rid of two Chrises already, can they?

ReplyDeleteI get the impression that the decision was made by Lotus (Brian Calvert), not Chris Nguyen.

ReplyDeleteBased on this, would it be reasonable to assume that Nguyen found that radio wasn't his cup of tea? As far as I know, he hadn't worked in radio prior to this. Also, there are plenty of people out there who find themselves to be more comfortable being on TV compared to being on radio, and vice-versa.
DeleteAt least you don't have to worry about appearing 10 pounds heavier when it comes to radio. Radio is still a more intimate medium and thr biggest challenge (if not one of them) is the element and balance of time.

DeleteThere currently isn't a weekend anchor opening at KIRO. Jason is temporarily in that role, filling in for Eric Thomas, who is covering for DeeDee Sun while she’s on maternity leave. Unless DeeDee decides not to return, it’s unlikely that any anchor positions will open up in the near future - though, of course, things can always change. Eric Thomas is away frequently because he has a child in Toronto (his previous market). With the exception of Gary, Monique, Morgan, Elle, Linzi and Nick, I anticipate that many of the reporters may end up leaving - either when their contracts expire or before. If Chris is interested in anchoring, a good strategy might be to join KIRO as a reporter and wait to see how things evolve. Given the current climate over there, it's likely more departures will happen.
