In June Seattle Radio Ratings, it's The Return of the JEB!

Yes, although KUOW has won the top PPMs spot again, KJEB has jumped into second.  "Come and listen to a story 'bout a station named Jeb."    That move pushed KZOK to third.   KIRO AM sports radio had a good run in June, popping into the top 5 with a .5 boost, maybe from Cal Raleigh??

  1. Is KIRO FM starting to become irrelevant?

  2. KIRO FM ratings ae flat but consistent and given the loss of Dori, Ross and Colleen, that probably makes them feel stable, at least. Growth is another story. Like I mentioned, the AM side maybe getting a Mariners boost, but also fans may be listening more to games than watching on Root, with the 20 bucks a month and a random mix of announcers.

  3. They are stable. But they have been stable for years. Not much change after Dave and Colleen left. To me it says no new listeners. Of their current crop of hosts only two have the chops to be a go to listen. Unfortunately they are paired with dead weight

  4. Mariners day games are massive boosts for the AM. One or two of those a week can win the week and month. The actual talk shows are down over the last 36 months but station is propped up with the baseball play by play. Wondering more about the old KOMO AM and how or if it will survive.

  5. I agree that the jury is out on the old KOMO radio (KNWN). They have added some TV types but I don't think that is going to pin their meter. Nobody really knew much of Aaron Wright and Chris Nguyen because they were TV short-timers with no crossover drawing power to radio. Denise is a pro, so Calvert must use the summer to try to build morning drive traction when Labor Day hits and people are driving more for school drop offs and return to office.
On the KIRO side, both Harger and Ursula were major news players in the market, and since have become show hosts. That's risky because doing successful radio talk is very difficult. Got to have a knack and skill aiming for opinion, not just news facts.

    1. Harger seems to be doing well with Manda Factor. I'm not a regular KIRO listener, but from clips I've seen online, I'd say he is certainly trying to do better at the opinion side. Manda is doing quite well at it. Same for Ursula.

    2. Not sure what would drive KIRO FM to closer to the top three again. KUOW seems to own the news wars month after month. Maybe a more controversial host with hotter takes? Meanwhile, KNKX is moving up nicely, up more than half a share point. SO we have two public stations beating KNWN. and just behind KIRO. Of course, no demos are published, so that's a major unanswered quesiton.

    3. Will KUOW and KNWN be able to maintain their ratings if they have to cut their news budgets as a result of the loss of federal funding that is likely coming their way? I would hate to see that happen.

    4. A lot is at stake for sure. In DC, WAMU-FM out of American U., has been number one for ages, consistently beating the long powerful WTOP Newsradio. The funding cuts will take a toll if they happen and I wonder how that will impact pledge drives. More of the and more often and more aggressive, even??

    5. I would say so, at least for KUOW. The Seattle Times' "Voices for the Free Press" newsletter had this quote about them yesterday.

“We’re ready to go with an emergency on-air pledge drive to try to raise about $1.4 million,” said Kerry Swanson, interim general manager at Seattle-based NPR affiliate KUOW.

  6. Ursula is a complete pro I find her very listenable. If you can catch the show when Angela Poe Russell is in for Gee it makes for interesting listening

  7. Is there any breakdown for HD FM channels ? The only reason I even know they exist is because that’s how I follow the Mariners-on one of the KIRO-FM HD channels. The other 2 aren’t worth the airwaves (KIRO-AM & KVI-AM simulcasts).

    1. If you go to the bottom of the chart I posted, there are a few listed, but the ones you like probably didn't get enough traction to be acknowledged. Not sure.

  8. Totally agree.....but radio talk is predicated on controversy, which a former news person might struggle with.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
