How will The CBS late night vortex affect this Seattle TV?

CBS has announced that it will cancel Stephen Colbert's show next May. The show that follows him is already gone.   Was this a retaliation for Colbert criticizing Paramount for making a deal with Trump to protect the Skydance sale, which he called a bribe?    Of course it was, despite CBS citing financial issues.    I wonder if CBS will continue funding late night programs when he is gone and if they don't, will KIRO go back to the late night movie????   Or second-run sydie crap?

  1. Certainly a surprise, even though I watch Kimmel. Colbert should land on his feet.

  2. Yikes! Horrible news for the future of comedy, late night programming, and free speech. I wish Colbert and team all the best.

  3. As for what CBS will replace Colbert with, that is a very good question with no clear answer. They're replacing the show that followed his with old reruns of Byron Allen's "Comics Unleashed" and not developing a new show for that timeslot. I'd like to think that there is still enough value in the 11:35pm timeslot to warrant having a new show, but I honestly don't know at this point if CBS even feels its necessary. Regardless of what happens, I would expect a larger switchoff of viewers at the end of the 10pm hour of primetime as CBS will have less to offer and potentially far less to viewers after that. KIRO's late news may very well take a hit in the ratings.

    1. A Colbert YouTube show or podcast would do gangbuster numbers. He's made his money and can do anything he wants. CBS is DOA right now. Bad morning show, bad evening show, major changes at the top, so look out.

    2. Not till May 26, unless he makes them so angry with his posts, they fire him for cause.

    3. I agree that Colbert could do very well with a YouTube show or a podcast. I look forward to seeing what he comes up with once his time at CBS done. I don't think that May 2026 will be the last we see of him.

  4. I think this will lead more people to cancel their Paramount+ subscriptions. I signed up in part because I enjoyed watching Colbert, After Midnight, and The Daily Show in the morning, without commercials. One is already gone, one is leaving, and I’m not feeling positive about the third. I’ll just go back to my DVR. I’ll do anything to avoid commercials (except during newscasts and sports), especially now that the networks are pilling more and more of them into their programming.

    1. The networks can't seem to force enough commercials down our throats. And they are always for the same brands and companies. How many more times do we need to hear about Skyrizzi, Jardiance, Farxiga, Wegovy, Wayfair, The Real Real, Deal Dash, Burger King, The Farmer's Dog, and all the other brands and companies that seem to have their commercials on endless repeat? Sometimes, there are even two ads for the same brand or company in one block of commercials. Its insane! If the networks must saddle us with more commercials, they would do well to at least try to recruit a larger selection of brands and companies to advertise.

    2. As for Paramount Plus, Colbert's cancelation is certainly not going to help the service retain viewers. But how many viewers will cancel their subscriptions over this remains to be seen.

  5. Debate will continue over whether this was truly a financial decision or the result of pressure from the administration. One thing is certain: CBS announced it now to strengthen its chances of gaining FCC approval for the Paramount-Skydance merger. CBS has lost its way, big time.

    1. By that logic, should we expect an announcement in the coming days regarding The Daily Show? Jon Stewart has also made his displeasure with Paramount's deal with Trump known. And his contract is up in December.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
