It's a Blog Birthday Party!

June 30, 2024, a year ago, I started the Seattle Media Blog (MEDIA MAVEN) because I thought the television news landscape in the market finally needed some attention as well as some strong criticism.  The Seattle Times gave up because TV news didn't draw readers.  Although I have been harsh at times, in total, I believe it has brought important attention to issues that should be noticed, in numerous cases.  It also pointed out how shallow the tv news business continues to be, with my experience offering a experienced eye.

Thanks to you loyal readers, the blog has garnered 133,000 views and almost 1,000 comments along the way.   I appreciate you reading and I want your feedback.   Don't hesitate to write.

I know the summer of news nuggets may be slow, but as fall approaches, we will see how the Fox 13 morning expansion and streaming changes evolve; if KIRO will hire more help to stop the erosion of staff and at least get a third weather anchor; if the new news boss at KOMO will add some fresh ideas instead of his old tricks and give more air time to Steve Soliz, and will KING add more news management power, now that ND Julie Wolfe has major regional responsibilities with multiple Tegna stations, and will it replace Met Mike Everett with a fulltime hire.

Anyway, wish the blog an HB and recommend any changes you would like to see.

Thanks again for reading, enjoying and commenting.

  3. Happy Birthday, Seattle Media Maven blog! This has become by far the best source of information about what is happening with our local TV stations. With so much happening in the local TV landscape right now, Western Washington is fortunate to have someone staying on top of it who knows the industry inside and out. I have only been reading and commenting for the past few months, but have already gained a better understanding of the ins and outs of the stations I've been watching my entire life. I look forward to seeing where this blog goes next. Thank you, Wayne! Keep up the great work!

  4. Thank you so much, I appreciate all of your interest and kind words. At some point I may add a video component to the blog, commenting to supplement posts, but as they say in TV news, Only Time Will Tell."

  6. I really appreciate your work and words. The public needs better reporting on local issues. I find local news to be a shadow of what it was 50 years ago.
Seattle and surroundings would elect better leaders if news was more newsworthy and less just local entertainment

    1. I strongly agree that the public needs better reporting on local matters. Some stories are still covered quite well, but others are being ignored, especially outside of Seattle city limits. There are so many stories that are going unreported, its not even funny.

  7. Congrats on your blog's one-year anniversary, Mr. Lynch. Its always good to have a veteran
newsman of your expertise offering their two cents on the local media scene since the Times pretty much folded their TV section years back. I know you're a visual kind of journalist since you come from TV news, but you ever thought of a weekly podcast supplement since it takes less time in comparison to video as you have to create the graphics, the editing, etc. Your commentary is both insightful and with a hint of bashing that ticks off some, so if you do start something, I might as well call it "Lynch's Lynching". I only thought of it since "Wayne's World" was taken and you don't want us to belt out to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and your readers commenting "We're not worthy!". Congrats again, Mr. Lynch and happy to have offered some of my take on your blog over the past year.

  8. Another name idea (as "Lynch's Lynching" is a bit too much) would be something done at the end of the week and it contains also a word found TV news scripts: "Wayne's Wrap".

  9. Thanks Felt, yeah that alliterative one won't fly...ever. I would probably do a newsletter instead of a podcast, but neither is on my radar right now. You never know, though. I very much enjoy your comments and those of other readers. I know I get a bit over critical at times, but I am developing some good sources regardless.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
