Going upstream soon at Tegna for morning news

Tegna has announced that its stations will be “significantly expanding their already substantial local news programming.”  It is launching live and on-demand, daily local newscasts from 7 to 9 a.m. in 50 plus markets through streaming, connected TV apps, and its station’s websites.  Will launch this summer and into the fall.  Portland's KGW already on board.  We will see when it hits on KING and KREM in the PNW.  KING pushes its app for breaking news.  There is also a definite possibility that KONG will air the live stream.  This looks like the first move by the big wig Tegna hired away from CBS

  1. This seems like a generally smart move. However, it’s unclear what impact—if any—it will have in Seattle, where KONG already airs a live-streamed newscast.
That said, all broadcasters need to walk and chew gum at the same time: their streaming platforms must offer distinctly different content. Otherwise, MVPDs will begin to argue there’s no justification for continued retransmission fees, much less an increase—"Why should we pay when you're competing directly with us through your streaming apps?"
Broadcasters also need to prepare for a future without network affiliations, where they'll largely have to program their own schedules. Right now, they leverage big-event TV/live sports to justify retrans fee hikes. But within a few years, most of that content will migrate to streaming platforms. It’s house of cards - hard to say how it will all shake out.

  2. I don't think KONG is streaming any newscasts. The have 7-9 in the morning live on set when KING surrenders to Today. Or am I missing something.

  3. I am saying that they do the 7-9 live newscast on TV, not exclusively for sreaming. And is it streamed at the same time? Or available later. Is the new plan to stream live exclusively? Honestly, I don't have the app and never watch KONG in the morning.

  4. On the app KING already airs KONG morning news just like with KUSA when they go to the Today Show they go to their sister station with their morning show from 7am-10am and it airs on their app at the same time.

    1. When did KING'S morning news expand to run until 10am on weekdays? I always thought it ended at 9am.

  5. Thanks for that info. I am not a news app viewer, so I understand. What I wonder is are they planning a different tupe of newscast for streaming only at that time slot. News release is a little murky on that. I have seen some FOX 13 streaming of news updates, like the big aaccident on 90 today. Looks pretty good at first glance.

  6. My cable grid reads that it still ends at 9 and gives way to The 700 Club. That's what I am seeing on air as I write this.

    1. Thats what I thought. Maybe they'll expand to 10am as part of this new streaming venture that Tegna is doing, but I didn't think they had done it yet.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
