Disney Trip for a Seattle TV

Looks like Seattle Refined in KOMO will be filing shows at Disney.  From my experience, Disney usually foots the bill for this kind of coverage. Pay expenses for coverage???

  1. Junk payola TV, but I’d guess nobody watches that show imagining it’s much more.

  2. That's Disneyland not Disney World

  3. Yeah, cheaper from Seattle, right? More about are they being covered with expenses? but OK! thanks.

  4. KOMO is an ABC affiliate and Disney owns ABC.

  5. At least it gives Seattle Refined some new content to air. Better than endless repeats for a show that does serve as the lead-in to KOMO's afternoon and evening news block, I suppose.

    1. I’ve seen the same Johnny Tsunami, Gardening with Gaard, and cupboard organizing segments over and over for months, if not years. Wish I was joking. They rarely produce new content, which is too bad. If they put in some effort and actually spotlighted the current theater shows in town, hottest restaurant of the week, and NW daytrips, it could be a valuable show and strong lead in for KOMO News. As it stands now, it makes people turn the channel rather than tune in.

    2. How often does Seattle Refined produce new episodes? Considering it airs five days a week, I would have thought that there would at least be three or four per week. But it doesn't sound like they are doing that.

  6. And how is this any different than Evening Magazine? I recall they had a trip to somewhere in Ireland that I think was sponsored by Disney. Or New Day Northwest and health care companies? Almost all local programming is sponsored by some business. And even parts of local news are brought to you by someone else. It’s pay-to-play (which is a nicer way of saying payola). Love the blog, hope you can continue it as long as you want.

  7. Not different at all, no doubt about it. It was more about an ABC affil pushing the Disney mother ship further upstream in this particular instance. But Disney has long been doing this. When I was i Baltimore, we sent our sports guy to do Goofy Golf in Orlando for like two years. They didn't own TVs in the 80s of course. Thanks for the kind comments, I appreciate it. I will keep it going, so rest east...LOL

  8. I don't watch it at all, so no idea on reruns, but ironically, the show won an Emmy this month and look at how many were on the entry form and got statues. All these for one special? It proves my editorial point about the NATAS money grab.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
