Fox 13 lady crows about her dual role.

Fox 13's Abby Acone doing some major self marketing about her success as a news co-anchor and meteorologist on the Fox 13+/ KJZO weekend morning shows, a channel with little news standing except as a side duopoly.   She says she gets a lot of support from the staff but that's because they don't have to work weekend mornings.

Personally, I find the show hard to watch, lots of fluff and inane banter.  It's a money and head count saver (they never formally replaced Jade Elliott on the show with a new hire), a small retention incentive and a news credibility killer, but carry on.   Weather people anchoring news causes me to experience a major journalistic cold front.

If it starts happening on main shows, run for cover.    Don't want to Marriott or Allard doing news either.

Here's a selfie and post.  It's all about Me TV.

  1. Ditto on the fluff an inane banter. Not a fan of the Saturday pairing

  2. I can't say I'm a big fan of the fluff and banter either, but I do believe that weekend mornings are probably the best place for it as many people want to take things a little easier on weekends, especially with how intense the news cycle is these days. Yes, they want their hard news and weather, but they also want lighter fare, and the fluff and banter can count as some of that. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it must appeal to some or Fox 13 wouldn't allow it to continue.

  3. Consider this: Fox pushes those weekend morning newscasts to its secondary channel while using paid programming in the same time slots on 13. That speaks for itself. Obvioulsy not good enough for the mother ship and the paid stuff would earn far less if it was on 13+ That anchor team would never work on the main channel. Is it an alternative? Well, last weekend Abby and Tayjor talked for a minute about how cute it was to watch a vulture egg hatch. A vulture egg. That's morning fare at its worst, IMHO

  4. When Fox 13's weekend morning newscasts were originally launched, I was under the impression that they were placed on the secondary channel so that they could air in full without childrens (E/I) programming, "Fox News Sunday" and weekend sports programming getting in the way. However, seeing what airs on the main channel during part of the 7-10am timeslot that the newscast runs for on the secondary channel does show that the newscasts are not the biggest priority for Fox 13, hence why they are staffed the way they are.

    1. The 13+ newscast is there to get whatever revenue possible opposite the paid programming on the mother ship. Neither Winkel or Acone are prime time players on a main newscast. I listened to Matthew Smith anchor Wednesday...worst non-command-voice in local TV News. Hana has a deeper pitch.

  5. As for the banter about watching a vulture egg hatch last weekend, I agree that it wasn't the most desirable fare to put on a newscast. It would have fit better on "Studio 13" or on a commercial break "behind the scenes" or "chat with me during the break" type of live stream that some anchors do.

  6. Just put it on the web so we can choose to watch. Not on TV.

  7. I agree most conversations are vapid. But I think they may be trying to attract a younger demographic. Unrelated, but I noticed today (May 25th) fox13+ is just showing a replay of the night before’s 10pm news. Lazy!

    1. Unlikely any TV newscast would attract a younger demographic these days. Meanwhile, I wonder if someone didn't make it to work on time Sunday or there was an automation issue the show. Sounds like a backup plan. Thanks for your comments, I appreciate them.

    2. I agree that Fox 13 may be trying to attract younger demographics as they do need to bring in new audiences if they are going to be able to be around long into the future as the average age of TV news viewers is on the older side. While such newscast banter may be entertaining and interesting to a handful of viewers, it may only serve to hasten the demise of an already eroding industry as it may alienate the viewers that currently watch local TV newscasts enough to make them switch off.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.
