Another look at the new CBS Evening News

Monday, no billboard of upcoming stories, which is not a wise decision, especially after a 5:30 lead story on 'Tarriff Uncertainty."  Huh?...no real impact on viewers yet.   Then the Money Watch segment was next on tariff impact, but the female studio reporter badly needed a step stool, so as not ot be dwarfed in stature by Dubios, the stadning main male anchor.  Graphics were very impressive on an immersive set, but they focused on car battery costs????  What?  Not daily people impact.  I haven't bought a battery lately.

On to the White House reporter for more on tariffs that caused the stock market to dip, but the graphics here seemed a bot cartoonish, IMHO.   What's the impact going forward this week for the market?

The so-called 'Round-up" segment seemed to downplay the closing of the USAID office. Big story that deserved more attention.

Next up a story on FBI agents being questioned by the administration about J6.   Ok, but all graphics and no human side.   Can't talk to a former agent about the chilling effect????

Interestingly, NO Margaret Brennan from DC tonight; perhaps it is her day off after working FTN Sunday, but it left the two male anchors as a weak tandom to me, with no context from Brennan with so much going on.  This show is a full court press for CBS, so NO DAYS OFF.

On to a airplane safety story about the DC crash.  Very strange that there was NO mention of a tug-plane mishap at O'Hare that caused injury or the fire on takeoff for a United flight over the weekend.  Big miss, IMHO.  Gotta make it more relevant to what's going on at airports after last week!

Immersive weather is only being driven by the graphics, period.   Overdone.

I was not impressed by the overall mission of this show.  It's just not a strong catch-up of the day's key news.   Underproduced.

Rebecca Stevenson has left KOMO

"I am no longer at Komo 4." Thanks.  Longtime Weather Anchor Rebecca Stevenson confirms that she left the station just before Christmas.  Her last Facebook posts are 12/17.  She has the Seattle station Quintafecta, having worked at the old NWCN, KING, KIRO, KCPQ and KOMO.  Looks like her decision.  Wants a new chapter.   She was doing mainly weekend evenings for KOMO.  Perhaps Stella Sun will move there.   She has been sharing weekend mornings with Theron Zahn.

Seattle TV Weekender Ends Her Run

So long to KOMO's longtime weekend morning anchor Lee Stoll who did her final show Saturday.  She previously worked at KIRO7 and KREM2 in Spokane and did a little fill-in for me at the old NWCN.  She's a Northwestern U grad.   Weekend weather sidekick Theron Zahn will likely step right into anchor slot.  Newcomer Stella Sun may also be in the mix.  Zahn bid Lee a final goodbye this morning.  She is not revealing what is next, saying "That's for later." Also, next month Komo News Operations boss Dennis Hanson and longtime Production Tech Rena Mullen are retiring. There's a big Studio C station bash for them and retiring ND Phil Bruce on December 5th.

Where is Frankie?

Many have missed KIRO 7's weekend PM weather anchor, Frankie Katafias, so I reached out to some of my sources to find an answer.    She is apparently taking a few months of leave, but not known specifically what the reason may be.  Although there is uncertainty, it could be a personal or family matter.   I am told she is expected back at some point in the new year.  She is a great asset to what has become a troubled station.  Meanwhile former KOIN Portland chief met holds down the fort.
