Since KOMO moved KUNS/Univision to an affiliation with the CW network in 2023, forming ARC Seattle, there has been a major gap in news for a large Hispanic audience. That's about to be corrected and here's the story courtesy KOMO's Seattle Refined program:
Seattle's Hispanic community will soon have more Spanish-language news broadcast options thanks to a new partnership between Comcast and Se Habla Media. With a grant supporting operations and a dedicated weekday slot at 7 a.m. on Comcast Xfinity’s channel 79, this initiative aims to bridge the gap in Spanish television access for over 60,000 Hispanic residents in Seattle.
Jaime Mendez News, a Spanish-language newscast, has returned to Seattle TV as a result of this partnership. The collaboration between Se Habla Media and Comcast emerged to address the lack of Spanish newscasts in the Seattle area.
“When Sinclair Broadcasting group let go of its Univision affiliate at the end of 2023, the only local Spanish newscast on TV in our area also disappeared,” said Diana Oliveros, co-founder of Se Habla Media. “This sudden lack of a newscast posed yet another barrier to important information for many Hispanics. So, we decided to create our own local media outlet.”
Se Habla Media was founded by Oliveros and her husband, Jaime Mendez, to fill the void left by Univision's departure. The newscast launched in January 2024 from the couple's home, which also served as their studio—a true labor of love.
"Our collaboration with Jaime and Diana aligns seamlessly with Comcast's mission to support our communities, advance digital equity, and help small businesses succeed," said Rodrigo Lopez, Senior Vice President of Comcast Pacific Northwest Region. "By supporting Se Habla Media, a news outlet created by Latinos for Latinos, we are helping to keep our Spanish-language community informed about local events and raise awareness of important local issues."
