Oh and who approves this trash at KCPQ?

Disgusting breakfast fare from Fox 13 Seattle putting up a shot of a Valentine card promotion from a zoo on its Sunday morning news.    You might consider your audience at the time of day, maybe?   Is there a producer in the house?   And anchor Abby Acone added the word 'poop' to the accompanying copy.

Fox 13+ Weekend lineup

Another interesting weekend morning talent mashup on Good Day Seattle on FOX.  Street reporter Alejandra Guzman co-anchored news with Winkel Saturday a.m. and Abby Acone handled solo weather.   On Sunday a.m. Abby was back both co-anchoring news and soloing weather.   BUT, she also anchored all of the sports news/video on the show.  That was a true Trifecta of content for her!!   In the last few weeks, Mayovsky, Garcia, Guzman and Acone have done news anchoring.   It's fair to note that all of this is NOT happening on the main FOX13 channel.  Maybe just vacation coverage?    Oh, and just to make sure I had Erin's name spelled correctly, I found this.  Very interesting credibility challenge and that she is a news anchor.  Doing just weather is no problem but the station must believe in her news skills, where I would have (and have previoulsy had) a serious question.   Their call. https://www.smgmodels.co...

Nice work, Angie!

With the announcment today that Angie Mentink will be a permanent part of the Mariners TV telecast team this season, she joins some powerful ladies who have made the journey to important on-air media roles in our market:   Shannon Drayer for M's Radio, Jen Mueller for M's TV and Hawks radio sideline, Elise Woodward for UW radio football and Storm TV, Jessamyn McIntyre for WSU radio sideline, Alyssa Charlston-Smith for Fox 13 Seattle and newcomer Aurielle Orsuto for KING.   Gotta mention Linda Cohn of ESPN, former KIRO7, now on KHN along with Alison Lukan and Piper Shaw.    So much progress and professionalism.   Kudos to all. I also wanted to salute some previous broadcast ladies, Michelle Ludtka for 13, Andrea Nakano and Lisa Kearney for KING, and even The Fabulous Sports Babe on local and national radio back in the day.

Blowers out of New Mariners Broadcast Rotation

Per Adam Jude in the Seattle Times, Jay Buhner and Dave Valle, both former Mariners, will rotate as baseball game analysts alongside lead pbp man Aaron Goldsmith, joining Angie Mentink of Root Sports and Ryan Rowland-Smith, whom we posted about earlier.   Mentink, a former college softball athlete, did some part-time booth work last season.  Her full appointment is a major first for the Mariners, too.  Longtime analyst Mike Blowers is out.  Of course, Dave Sims has gone to the Yankees, and we can report that Blowers has had health issues in recent years.  Not sure if it was a factor. Mr. Smith Returns to the Mariners Booth

Word that former M's pitcher has been signed to the 2025 broadcast team again, but there is no clarity if he will work both TV and radio (with RIzzs) or just TV (with Goldsmith) and/or if it is occasional appearances like last year or full time.  His Aussie accent may be too much for radio, so we will assume TV booth.   Mariners have been slow to make announcements about changes in the booth after the departure of Dave Sims for the Yankees.  Nothing official from the team on Smith so far, this is coming from an Octagon Post on X.

Some thoughts from a former Seattle Tegna Newsguy

It's been almost 10 years (April 2016) since Tegna offered buyouts at KING5 Seattle (luckily I retired in 2015 from the old-owned NWCN, which the company unceremoniously terminated in Jan. 2017).   The people at K5 saw how bad the company was getting and talent like Dennis Bounds, Jeff Renner, Linda Byron, Linda Brill and many others took the money and escaped.   They were replaced by mediocre talent hires, albeit much, much cheaper ones, but with no staying power, so the turnover in talent (and mgmt) rolled on.   Not to mention the programs Tegna tried to invent to help it stay afloat around that time, like the doomed Sister Circle and Daily Blast and a talk show hosted by a Texas evangelist.  They all failed, dollars were wrongly spent, and they are now  distant memories.   The leaders of those efforts are gone now or are about to be, under a new boss with no broadcast experience at all.    He has torpedoed all marketing staf...

Will Cascade PBS go under the FCC microscope?

There is a FCC investigation cooking about whether or not PBS and NPR stations are violating federal law by running commercials?   They are all supposed to be publicly funded.   If you watch the interminable pledge drives on KCTS (Cascade PBS) Seattle or KBTC Tacoma, you are bombarded by pleas to call and contribute, often durin rerun music/concert shows or Ken Burns docs.  But those drives don't pay all of the bills.   This article from the Columbia Journalism Review offers insights, explanations and proposals -- including points about public radio -- and is worth a read.  Interestingly, KUOW at the University of Washington is a monthly radio ratings leader and KNKX has grown in recent years and took home a national Edward R. Murrow award for content.  https://www.cjr.org/analysis/npr-and-pbs-face-a-moment-of-truth.php

Tegna stations in the PNW can no longer 'VERIFY'

Our friends at ftvlive.com say tha Tegna has killed off its highly heralded VERIFY team.  It's goal was to fact check and root out phony information from social media and elsewhere.  This move follows the demise of all the marketing teams at its stations across the country.  KING in Seattle, KGW in Portland, KREM in Spokane and KTVB in Boise are affected.    KING has a slogan STAND FOR TRUTH.   This won't help their 'standing.'    Another brick pulled from The Wall.     Read on: https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2025/2/3/tegna-kills-verify-team

Another look at the new CBS Evening News

Monday, no billboard of upcoming stories, which is not a wise decision, especially after a 5:30 lead story on 'Tarriff Uncertainty."  Huh?...no real impact on viewers yet.   Then the Money Watch segment was next on tariff impact, but the female studio reporter badly needed a step stool, so as not ot be dwarfed in stature by Dubios, the stadning main male anchor.  Graphics were very impressive on an immersive set, but they focused on car battery costs????  What?  Not daily people impact.  I haven't bought a battery lately. On to the White House reporter for more on tariffs that caused the stock market to dip, but the graphics here seemed a bot cartoonish, IMHO.   What's the impact going forward this week for the market?   The so-called 'Round-up" segment seemed to downplay the closing of the USAID office. Big story that deserved more attention. Next up a story on FBI agents being questioned by the administration about J6.  ...

Interesting or misplaced KOMO PROMO?

Near the end of ABC's WNT Monday night, KOMO in Seattle ran a promo to psuh Sinclair's heavily biased 'Spotlight on America' show about 'FDA Baby Food Toxins' that was coming up at 6.   But the usual local news was on at that time.  Hmmm.  What happened?  Wrong night?  Accident?   Bumped by the new ND on a snow day?    Maybe a traffic log error? Anyway, Preston P. is anchoring the 6.  Where is Chris Nguyen, the big new hire?  Maybe an off day? Just an observation.

Seattle TV Sports Guy hammers M's

Kudos to Fox 13 Seattle Sports Director Aaron Levine for shouting out against the Mariners boring off-season talent activity and its steadfast belief in the future nas is.  Seattle sports reporters are generally reluctant to criticize the teams, and stations like KING have partnerships with the Hawks and Kraken, so there's that.   KIRO radio is obviously in bed with M's and Hawks.  I like Niko T at KOMO some, but he is too often a fan boy, especially on social media, despite his protestations.  KIRO 7 has no sports  at all.  Just sad.   Aaron Levine at this link: https://www.fox13seattle.com/sports/commentary-hoping-best-mariners-offseason-optics-give-us-case-deja-vu
